Did Mannone receive a pay rise he was happy with, I'd expect he did ......... was that 'holding us to ransom', I don't believe so.

Is Wickham trying to get what he believes a Premier League striker is worth?

Poyet has said he's important to the club and expects to be playing him in the first team.

What does that make him worth?

Dunno mate, I`m in two minds about him. I expect him to start in the 1st team and would love to see him banging them in but has still to prove to me he can keep doing it.
I keep thinking of that Irish lad (forgotten his name, played on the left wing) got off to a cracking start but when the other teams worked him out he quickly went backwards.

It`s absolutely right he played a massive part in keeping us up but all the talk of him saving us single-handed you`d think he was the only one on the pitch.

We know contracts are not worth the paper they`re printed on and, if he hoys them into the net next season it strengthens his hand even more.

I think he`s earned a pay rise and a contract extension but not silly money. Not yet. For me, it`s next season where he can really prove his worth (or not as the case may be). 2 years at say £40k would seem reasonable to me and can always re-negotiate.

Villa Park is a ****ing dive as well, I get that historically it was special, and all that ****e, but no, poor views and facilities, not bad for access but not great, someone is gonna think 'new stadium at some point ££££££'.

It's just a dull, dour club Villa, has been for many a long year, it's almost like the club is in depression, I don't see it changing much.

Can't really add much more to this, they just **** everything up, they could have got £35m for Benteke last summer as well.

Even more so though mate, if he bangs them in trying to get a 'big club' to notice him it's worth much more to you than £4m would be in any circumstances, regardless of the compensation. No lose really innit?

All the comments on villa are cock on. Nobody wants to see a historic club sink without a trace but it's going to happen sooner or later but it's their own fault. They've become a badly run irritant stuck in the past and out of date. By bringing in Keane as a manager in waiting they're even going to eliminate the chances of the new manager boost in form. One of my choices for the drop at the moment. Stale, stagnant football club.

TBH mate, the finances bore me as much as they fascinate some others on here.

However, I will say this .........

If Wickham hadn't been brought back from Leeds, and we'd been relegated, some folk would've been happy to have seen him free transfered.

No one would've bought him and he'd have picked up another years for trudging around the 2nd division with Sunderland.

Either that or sent out on loan with us paying half his wages.

Things aren't as bad as they could've been.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet has told the club's director of football Lee Congerton he wants to hang on to the 21-year-old, whose five goals at the end of last season saved Sunderland's Premier League skin.

And he is determined to secure Wickham's future before the new campaign kicks off next month.

After midfielder Jack Colback joined bitter rivals Newcastle for free, Sunderland will not allow Wickham to run down his contract.

If they fail to reach agreement, they will reluctantly listen to offers for the youngster with newly-promoted Leicester and Southampton both keen on him.

Sunderland are in talks with Fiorentina to sign Marcos Alonso who enjoyed a successful loan stint at the Stadium of Light last term and are hoping the Serie A outfit will take centre half Modibo Diakite as part of the deal.

Poyet also wants to sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini permanently although the Black Cats are not willing to meet the Reds' £10m valuation of the Italian.

It sounds like all these deals are being done, if we sign Alonso, Borini and Wickham I will be a lot happier, then we can look at sorting out the centre back positions which is where we need some real quality. JOS and Brown will be fine as back up but I can't see either managing to be fit enough or good enough to be first choice all season long.

When I came round I just slept.
Was about 19.30 when I woke.
Couldn't sleep last night, eventually dropped off around 05.00 or so & slept until 10.30.

Was gonna do the grass today & then it started raining.

Leicester and Southampton target offered improved contract to fend off interest
Leicester City and Southampton target Connor Wickham has been offered another new improved contract by Sunderland, according to the Daily Star.

Wickham has already rejected one contract offer from Sunderland who are desperate to keep hold of last seasons savour whose goals ensured the Black Cats would be playing Premier League football next season. Leicester City and Southampton are said the be monitoring the situation.

The 21-year old former Ipswich Town man has just one year remaining on his current deal and should he continue to reject Sunderland’s attempts to retain his services the club may be forced into selling their star striker in order to prevent him from leaving on a free next summer.

Previous reports had stated the Foxes were readying a £5 million bid for the former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United loanee but at this point it is unknown whether that would be enough to tempt Sunderland into cashing in on Wickham.
