Now we know why Chile beat England so comfortably 2-0 at Wembley, last season.

I'm sure I remember Gerrard (who missed that game) saying in an interview after, that come the world cup, England will match teams like Chile. Delusion!

Strachan says that Spain's demise shows the rise of a new style of football that is played by Southampton, Atletico Madrid and Chile.

Plus we're seeing more teams use wing backs in the international game, never seen so many teams use 5 at the back for a world cup.

There is a link there (I think); Spain's season finished late and they had a lot of games plus end of season big games.

I think it's more that Lineker was right. Tiki-Taka doesn't work now. teams are pressing much higher and not allowing it. More goals are being scored from counters and interceptions now than 2 minutes of boring boring Spain/Barcelona sideways nothingness. Exciting football has returned.

Have to say that, as a non-purist these days I am so glad, if it proves to be true.

Admiring is one thing. Effectively implementing another. I very much hope he can and does. Seems fairly clear it's the way to go now.

Just before ITV's coverage went off the air this evening, WGS said of Chile's style or play, Southampton have been doing this for the last two years.

OK, he may have meant less than 18 months, but you have to love WGS. Never misses a moment to promote the club. :)
