Not that many seem to be exported, only seems imported players is the normal, no idea why this is? anyone any thoughts?

But one recent exports has all the hallmarks of a great player, cost a mint like.

Gareth Bale, could possibly go onto be the greatest ever export from Britain, has everything to his game.

Here's a few of some other contenders.

10. David Beckham (Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan)
9. Paul Lambert (Borussia Dortmund)
8. Trevor Francis (Sampdoria, Atalanta)
7. Graeme Souness (Sampdoria)
6. David Platt (Bari, Juventus, Sampdoria)
5. Chris Waddle (Marseille)
4. Steve McManaman (Real Madrid)
3. Gary Lineker (Barcelona, Grampus Eight)
2. Kevin Keegan (Hamburg)
1. John Charles (Juventus, Roma)

Is Bale gonna surpass the likes of Beckham and Keegan?

I think more young British players should go abroad at an early stage in their careers, so that some members of our national squads can have experience playing in different climates/against different styles of football. It'd benefit the home nation teams in the long term in my opinion.

Makes perfect sense to me..

So why do so few make the move?

Not sure mate, the language barrier might play a part, though so many on the continent can speak perfect English nowadays I can't see why that would be an issue.

Also Sky constantly reminding us that the PL is indisputably the best in the world probably doesn't help.

Aside from the football, living abroad is such an amazing, mind-broadening experience. I lived in France last year and I loved every second of it, and that was studying literature. I can't see why anyone on a professional footballer's wage wouldn't want to live in France, Spain or Germany, even if only for a time.

Full of bloody foreigners<whistle>

Nah in all honesty, i've no idea, maybe young British lads just ain't got the balls. Maybe they are scared of failure. I really don't know mate.

Easy answer is cost.

In English league player get many more wage, you can find player in top Serie A team earn maybe £10,000 and player in English Championship earn £20,000, no logic for foreign team to pay English player when they can take Croatian, Buylgarian, Norweigon, Hungarian, Polish etc for much less.

Only at very top level does it affect, like Bale.. you cannot be Slovakian Bale because he not exist.. even when this happen there is more barrier, language etc

Maybe you are correct, it's purely down to money, so does that make British players greedy or lazy?

By the way are you Slovakian?

That's definitely a possibility mate, I would imagine for some of them it'd do them the world of good to get away from the media spotlight in the UK though. Would be good to see some more hard-working, younger players like Bale going abroad, rather than posturing nobheads like Barton...

But he acquired a rather sexy french/scouse **** accent....

I am Bulgarian.

I don't think lazy, but maybe greedy due to cultural difference.

In most country player not in top-5 Champions League best player does not earn much, best Bulgarian player in Bulgaria is goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov and he earn in English money maybe £2500-3000 per week only and he one of best paid players ever in Bulgaria league, his team Razgrad is top of group B in Europa League, many clean sheets against top europe striker.

When this player go to Premier League, Bundesliga or La Liga he will earn minimum £20000 and all Bulgarian will say well done.. when random English of Chelsea acadamy at age 23 finally move to Hull or Nottingham Forest he will also earn £20000 and he played 0 Premier League games.

It is different mentality, complete.

I like you. Your way of thinking can bring many of us down to earth, especially with the obscene amount of money average players recieve.

Stoyanov is 26 now, If he can move in 1 or 2 years he can earn good until he maybe is 35 I hope he can get this chance.

But good example is this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Pavey

English player, playing right now for AIK of Sweden (Man Utd of Sweden) played many Europa league and champions league game... unfortunate that he is unknown and will not earn much money, most ironic is that League One player can maybe earn more.

If you ask English player if he likes this, I think he prefer to play in Championship.

Well then, i guess that partially answers one of my questions.

Spot on.

Clubs overseas only pay mega wages once a player is established, you don't get a player on a 20k contract on potential.

Remember Messi, he'd paid some 30 or so first team games before he got his 'proper' contract.

Then comes the double whammy, British players, whether we have bad coaches, attitudes, they rarely improve over 24-25, I can only really think of Beckham, Scholes & sorry, but Shearer who improved after that age, the rest remain stable at best.

In Spain, Xavi, Iniesta were excellent players as youngsters but hit 25 or thereabouts and they improved dramatically, where then is the incentive to buy someone like Rooney on 300k a week?

Gerrard could have went abroad, Scholes could have played anywhere, Lampard probably wouldn't have suited his game is very 'English' brilliant here but technically may have come up short in Spain, after that, Beckham was signed predominantly for his marketability, but being Beckham made good of his chance, put simply, we haven't had players to export, reflected in a failing national side.

The reason Bale went, is that he was stand out close to world class and still young, and frankly, Bale is a better player than anybody in the England squad, were he English, we could have some hope of a tournament win in his career span.

You see Croatian teenagers so technically superior with the ball at their feet, but with **** decision making, now, which is it easier to fix?

You bring a raw talent from Europe, on a pittance, with natural footballing ability, and with some mental and tactical work you have a Rakitic (prime example, was raw in Switzerland, went Schalke for £4million, developed, became tactically astute, went Sevilla for £2million at end contract improved technically now £35million rated)

You take Wilshere from Arsenal for £34 million, and in 3 years you still have a Wilshere.

First ****ing class, as usual.

Still many un answered questions, why do British players not develop further?

Does the British game hold many a potential player back?

I think partially it's the bubble of English football, everything is highlighted.

In Spain, the sports pages remain that, the news pages will only feature sport around cup final days etc, they don't give a **** about a player having dinner with his bird.

Of course, we all here stories about youth coaching discouraging young lads from playing with flair, focusing on tactical and strength, how far had that got us?

Brazil, Spain, Argentina, they are brilliant because the players on 150k a week still know how to enjoy football, as with most things on England, anything you enjoy they try and beat out of you before you hit your 20's.

Those of us that ignore that bullshit have a happy life, sadly in the world of football ignoring a clueless **** ruining your gift leads to the scrapheap.

People were so against overseas managers and coaches, well guess what, we will NEVER win a tournament with the English philosophy, never.

This is correct. But also double-edge sword.

English league has so much money BECAUSE news is front-page because many people care about. In Spain ofcourse is important aswell, but complete different level.

With young players not develop, it also seems that money is big stopping device of potential. If you are young player with many targets for career it can drive you forward always, 21 years old with £60000 already has best contract.. nothing really to strive for... why get better? you already getting £60000?

Bulgarian player earning £1000 is trying everything to become player who can get £2000, then £3000, maybe if he can reach maximum £60000 also....

yeah to a degree it's true, but I'm not so sure the TV deal etc has any relevance to the players being in the news, more so an incredibly talented sales & markerting team within the FA.

The point you make on contracts is very good, but by the same token, you look at Ronaldo last night, was he thinking about money?

When he scored his first, I thought it was fantastic, he counted out 16 on his fingers, 16 goals scored in a CL campaign, a record, he cared, he cared about football, he has £100million banked, he's world footballer of the year, he's won everything he's realistically going to win as Portugal will come up short for him internationally, but he still was delighted to set a benchmark, to write more history, to once again show that he's the man.

That mentality, that has to be bred in, or born in, as a youth, no good saying to Wilshere now, in his 20's, 'get your head down kid'.

We breed good players with an over inflated sense of what they are, the one who didn't have that, Scholes, was our best player in 20 years.

Watching Ronaldo's unbridled joy at hitting another landmark in a career filled with them, I thought it was fantastic. I couldn't see any English player even caring 'actually, I didn't know until you just told me'.

**** sake.
