the majority of Python was crap , there was an abundance of ****e skits and silly animation that went on waaaay too long .
However Python also displayed some of the greatest comedy sketches too this day .
The greatest comedy movie And it had its fair share of satire and pathos is Life of Brian it is a total work of art .

Now at work last night i again had to suffer Big Bang theory , its got rat-tat-tat comedy , its written as if the audience are expected to nod off if a "joke isnt delivered within 3 seconds .
Infact i think 3 seconds is probably the maximum time between the canned laughter .

the episode i saw was the one where the tall skinny one gets burgled , gah! cue jokes about geeky things that got stolen

Monty Python? Have you the faintest idea of what a sitcom is? And not just you looking at some of the other posts on here.

Obviously most on here are too young to remember the likes of On The Buses, Terry and June and a whole host of others from the 1970s. They made some of the ones mentioned in this thread look like side-splitting comedy genius.

Anyone mentioned Terry n June?? Never The Twain. The Upper Hand?? The Thin Blue Line??

Carmine Father Ted is ****ing genius.

siiigh , i was merely replying to the previous comments about Python - i didnt realise i had to make it necessary to point out its not a sitcom - even though i alluded to it being a sketch show twice in the first paragraph , :p

I just thought of another horrific one .....Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Duty Free.

Apologies if anyone beat me to it, I cant be arsed to read 8 pages of this. And how has it got on to a discussion about best sitcoms as well? That's a whole other thread.

Is that the one with Keith Baron in it or have I just made that up?

Mrs Browns Boys is comedy for idiots. It's just bollocks; the comedy is far too obvious. The Morgana Show was ****ing terrible, especially that one she did about the special needs kid, which is awful.

Blackadder, Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, Porridge...they're all class.
I really like surreal stuff (somebody else mentioned it), so Garth Merenghi's Dark Place is probably my favourite 'modern' sitcom, closely followed by Black Books (Graham Linehan really knows how to write, Father Ted was brilliant.). Alan Partridge I can quote all day long, but if I want a bit of cringe I'll watch The Office (the UK one) or Extras. Ricky Gervais is ****ing class.

You could stick 100 people in a room on this one and get 101 different opinions. I never got why Only Fools was funny, it just didn't hit the spot for me.

My Best 3: Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Men Behaving Badly. Red Dwarf an honourable 4th.

Worst? There have been so many bad ones over the years. Ones that got a few episodes and then thankfully dies. 3 long runnings ones where the master tapes should be melted down and turned into inner soles: Friends, My Family and 2 1/2 Men. No redeeming features in any of them.

What an utterly pathetic dig. If you're going to criticise so many people in one sweeping statement, at least make a proper attempt to read the thread first so that you can be sure you've got your facts right. These are from posts 5 and 6 of the entire thread, so your brain wouldn't have had to work too hard...

Not a sitcom but can I offer a ****e 'comedy'? I never understood the huge and reasonably sustained success of Little Britain...

As for strict sitcom, maybe something like The Brittas Empire would get a mention. Edit - thanks to Golaccio reminding me I'd also vote for Mrs Brown's Boys.

Let's extend it to comedies as a whole, including sketch shows etc.

i almost wet myself remembering this rubbish

The Royale Family - although i did say earlier i didnt watch enough crap comedy to be able to comment i did also see a fair bit of this
For some reason it was popular at our house , it wasnt ever funny .
Just lazy people umming and arring over stuff WE talk about - oh and farting
