Seventy3 Magazine – Official Statement
Following the news of the confirmation of the “bubble” away game at St. James’ Park, Seventy3 felt compelled to add its weight behind the argument against this happening.
The notion of Sunderland fans being forced to travel on and then herded onto buses and driven into Newcastle for the game is a blatant disregard for our human rights.
One element of human rights is entitled “Freedom of Movement”. Freedom of movement is defined as:
“Freedom of movement, mobility rights or the right to travel is a human right concept that the constitutions of numerous states respect. It asserts that a citizen of a state in which that citizen is present has the liberty to travel, reside in, and/or work in any part of the state where one pleases within the limits of respect for the liberty and rights of others, and to leave that state and return at any time. Some immigrants' rights advocates who assert that human beings have a fundamental human right to mobility not only within a state but between states.”
The definition goes on to clarify:
“In some countries, freedom of movement has historically been limited for women, and for members of disfavoured racial and social groups.”
The announcement by the authorities, a decision by both football clubs in conjunction with Northumbria Police and apparently some fan liaison groups (of which we would like to hear from and confirm this) is clearly then breaching our civil liberty and placing us into the bracket of “disfavoured social groups”.
The fact that over the years the vast majority of travelling Sunderland fans to Newcastle have behaved within the limits of the law only adds salt to the wound and so we as Sunderland fans are in effect being doubly punished for a) daring to be a football fan and b) being tarred with the same brush as the Neanderthal antics from home “supporters” following Sunderland’s victory in Newcastle last April.
If anyone should be herded and chaperoned like animals, then surely it should be those, the mindless minority who like to hit animals?
The “bubble” plan indeed has its own flaws and who is to say, Sunderland fans will not make their own travel arrangements home, as many do not reside back on Wearside, thus causing a security concern in itself.
Modern football has been going down the drain for a long time now, with ticket price increases and a general lack of regard for the lifeblood of the game, us the supporters.
Seventy3 and its associates only hope football and the people with the power in the game, do not allow the people’s game to reach untenable murky depths, to which football fans will not follow the sport they began.
For too long now football supporters have been taken for granted and more often than not stripped of their dignity. Whilst there is a minority intent on causing disorder, the vast majority are decent hard working individuals, passionate about their team. There are after all minorities in all walks of life intent on inflicting pain, yet we do not see the majority in these cases punished!
We would now call upon the local constabulary and the region’s footballing powers that be to change their plans for the 1st of February and burst their own bubble, before the fans burst their own and stop going.

Following the joint statement from Sunderland AFC and Northumbria Police that our derby fixture in Newcastle on 1/2/2014 will be operating as a Bubble Trip, A Love Supreme would like to state our official position on the matter. We are of the opinion that the decision taken is categorically the wrong one.
Sunderland AFC has the privilege of being a football club which is supported from all areas of the North East, the United Kingdom and the world over. It defies logic that travelling fans would first have to journey to the Stadium of Light before being herded, like cattle, to Tyneside, only then to be taken back to Sunderland after the match. The arrangement will potentially add hours on top of the journey of some members of our loyal support.
Segregating fans to an even greater extent than normal will only act as a catalyst to increase hostilities between the two sets of supporters and it would be naïve to assume that Sunderland fans travelling back home after the match will not try to get home by other means. From a practical perspective, this simply does not work and is disrespectful to supporters, who are lifeblood of football.
Furthermore; we are football fans, we are not animals. We do not appreciate being tarred with the same brush as those who feel the need to express themselves by setting fire to wheelie bins, or punching livestock. Perhaps attention would be better focused on dealing with offenders more diligently as opposed to restricting the liberty of those who make Sunderland AFC the fantastic club that it is.
The North East derby is one of the greatest spectacles that the region has to offer and the limited enjoyment of it will not only diminish the occasion for those involved but also lower its reputation from an outsider's perspective.
In the modern era of football when fans already feel very estranged from their club, supporters have the right to feel disheartened that their continued and unconditional loyalty and love for SAFC has been rewarded with this inhumane treatment. We also feel that the club’s statement regarding this issue was patronizing, pompous and imprecise and that SAFC missed a real opportunity to fight the corner of the fans, or at least show their disdain at this breach of our human rights.
We sincerely hope that the arrangement will be reconsidered and that the derby on 1/2/2014 can be billed as a football match and not a freak show. If not, I guess that we, the fans, just don’t matter any more…

It is a free country they cannot force you to go by any transport, they cannot switch our matches now either ! you can go there to shop so what is the difference?, when they riot again in Feb after we win, I hope you are safe !. I notice the coaches are parked illegally behind the baths (north stand), that is not a road it has no white lines or signs stating so and they irritate me the drivers standing there when we lose.
The difference is that I would never go there to shop or anything else for that matter apart from to watch Sunderland play..
I feel bloody angry for our fans being persecuted for the behaviour of Mags..They stated that they don't want to have Newcastle businesses put out by escorting our fans from the station. What about all the match day traders at the Sheepfolds who had to shut up shop for the day because Sunderland fans were not allowed to walk through that way when the Mags used St Peter's Metro? Why don't they take all the Sunderland fans to St James' metro station, and ban the Mags from using it the same way they ban Sunderland fans from using St Peter's. That way they would not have as far to go with the escort.
