I always assumed Osvaldo is meant to be our Lambert replacement.

A backup keeper would be nice but we're not the only club to have a big drop off in quality behind our number 1. Right back is okay with Clyne and Chambers plus Cork and Yoshida able to do a job out there. At left back I think people have to forget talk of putting Clyne out there and accept Fox will be second choice until Targett comes through (or we decide Targett's never going to be good enough).

Assuming we continue playing 4-2-3-1 I'd go for someone else to play in the 3 (I'm not too bothered whether they're a "winger" or not). Either they can play in the middle between Lallana and JWP or on the left with Lallana moving into the middle. Rodriguez would then become third choice striker and back up for the wide players in the 3 behind the 1.

Mauricio seems willing to play Fox if Shaw out. I suspect he feels that if we are weakened on the left by Shaw's absence, why weaken the right side by moving Clyne.

Exactly what I was reasoning in a previous post on this thread.

    Me too ref Osvaldo/SRL.

As for Matt Targett, I suspect that very, very soon he will be given the chance to stand in for Luke. We're hardly backwards in putting our youth into the first team, so I expect to see him out there to be given the opportunity to shine.

Hasn't Mauricio been giving any young strikers a bench position this season? Thought he had. And if so then I would suggest that isn't just to send a statement to anybody. He isn't going to put Adam up front if SRL or Rodriguez get injured in a match and Dani is out. He will put the youngster on if he is on the bench.

I think there are a few that may be closer to getting on the pitch for the first team even if it is only if injuries during a game make that circumstance.

I think Osvaldo is another option, not a replacement.

I agree on Matt Targett. U19s level, and if he's near to Calum Chambers quality, then he'll do.

Same as always...think we need a playmaking attacking mid, a wide player with a bit of directness to allow us a different look if need be, and a fullback who can also provide cover at CB.

If Spurs are still looking to move hm on, Kyle Naughton on loan still makes sense for the latter, IMO.

He is talented with the right system and the right players around him and in his preferred AMC position which he played in against Villa. He's got a lot of catching up to do if he wants to fulfill his potential, and the last couple of seasons have been a waste.

Never ever, ever, ever, ever, forget that Cortese's aim is to fill as many positions as possible from our academy. It isn't just words - is it ever from him? - and it means that we probably all need to rethink our expectations for transfer windows.

    And I LOVE IT!

Really..? So if both Clyne and Shaw go down with the dreaded lurgi, next season, then Chambers and Targett can come in with no problem..? :)

Yep I wouldn't have anything against that. Chambers is probably the better at defending then Targett atm but he is talented.

Looking through the Academy, we do seem to have a few coming through. According to Jamie Carragher, no player wants to be a FB. His theory is that a FB is either a failed winger or centre back. I can see the logic in that too.

Calum Chambers can actually play in a few positions, centre midfield, wide midfield, or even CB, along with his more familiar position of RB.

We'd certainly be in for another CB if we did sell him, and frankly there probably are better players than Fonte affordable to us right now, but you're right, I don't see it.

Also, everyone should just forget this idea of signing a full back. Didn't need one in the summer, don't need one in January. A versatile attacking midfield player and we're done. Save keepers for the summer.

As I see it, it'll be Gaston out and Banega in. Halas. And I shall do cartwheels down the streets of Kuwait.

Maybe a CB too, but certainly no more than 2 in.

What sort of statement of intent would signing Andrés Iniesta be..? I've just heard a few mutterings.
