It seems really stupid to me to somehow hold it against De Ridder that 1) the fans liked him, and 2) the fans don't like Guly.

I don't see anyone who has that point of view. Some didn't like the "Steeeeeeeeve"-ing and thought it was annoying, others remarked on how strange it was that there was seemingly blind love for de Ridder and Guly was summarily rejected.

And there was blind love for de Ridder. I know several fans who would constantly say that they couldn't understand why others were picked ahead of him. It just goes to show one of the reasons why we are a declining footballing power: Athletes and 'tryers' are still appreciated way above good football players.

Shame they weren't prepared to pay money for him. How much did we shell out? These aren't crap players were giving away. We should at least get a few hundred k.

Best to just move them on. If we'd held out, we could have been stuck with paying some of his wages. This is probably best all round. I only realised recently (not being into accountancy) that they write off the value of a player on a yearly basis...for instance, a 5 million pound player on a 5 year contract will devalue (in the books) at 1 mill/yr.

I felt sorry that Guly felt he needed to apologise to fans for last season. Genuine guy...hope for him and us he has a great season.

So did I. He was obviously referring to his drink-driving conviction rather than anything else. It just shows that he was genuinely sorry and still felt he had to say something in public, even though almost a year had passed since the incident.

I wonder if on the Utrecht message boards they had a hundred or so tear-soaked pages going back and forth, rumoured sightings, agent issues etc about signing Steve De Ridder? Plus the standard YouTube vid of course.

I don't see anyone who has that point of view.

But that's the only explanation that's been offered for why certain people here can't stand De Ridder. There was a game last season where he came on in a blow out and played the last 5 or 10 minutes, doing nothing remarkably good or bad. People complained about this as if De Ridder has somehow cost us the game. He's fringe player/bench warmer, that's what they are there for.

The amount of hate directed towards a guy who never even plays and is really no threat of ever playing and is not exactly chewing up our wage bill is silly. And it's always pointed out in the context of Guly, like somehow those supporters who dislike De Rider are somehow smarter because they dislike De Ridder instead of Guly. But it's just as stupid to hate Guly for no reason as it was to hate De Ridder for no reason.

He only played 48 mins last season so there isn't much to remember but he hit a perfect corner against Sunderland that Fonte met 6 yards from goal (free header) and put it wide.

I didn't think he was good enough for the Championship the season before to be honest. But he looked ok against Sunderland in the only game he got given more than 5 minutes

Who hates him? Looked through the thread and the only comment I can see is Al who is pleased he is gone and one poster who just is pleased that they won't hear the crowd shouting "Steeeve!" again, nothing to do with him personally or as a player. Everyone else just comments along the lines of "Good move, not really good enough for us" which is true! I hardly see hatred spewed in his direction.

He was a squad player for the last two seasons and is now way down the order so we should move him on, for his benefit as well as ours. I think you are somewhat overstating things here.

I remember seeing his debut and it was mesmerising, his pace on the ball terrified the defenders. Of course, the defenders were not great and pace simply isn't enough in the top division. It was when he wasn't running that he got found out- insufficient skill on the ball to retain possession. I wish him well though. It's not as if we spent a fortune on him, and the wages will no doubt have increased with the promotions. He will get a good deal as a free agent and good luck to him.

Was that against West Brom pre-season? He looked very very good that day, quick, composed and intelligent. Along the way some signings don't come off, there will come a day when a 8 figure one doesn't.

Could be my knowledge extends beyond the realm of this thread.<whistle> Maybe I even mentioned a past incident!
