If Benteke is our top target - and we have £25m to spend - And Levy and AVB feel he is the perfect man for the job - He is not overpriced. If Benteke is not our top target - And we would have to risk our clubs finances to get him - and AVB and Levy feel another man is better for the job - He would be overpriced.
I can. Benteke has yet to prove to me, and I suspect, any prospective buyers, including Spurs, that he is worth £25mil. This is about value - not how much money you've got to spend. Chavski paid £50mil for Torres - was he worth it? Of course not. And Benteke is not worth £25mil - certainly not at this time, anyway. Benteke may be our top target. I don't know that. But, I strongly suspect that neither Levy nor AVB are prepared to risk £25mil on him.
You're missing my point. I'm not saying he's a £25m player. I'm not saying Levy and AVB will sign him. What I am saying is if we sign him for £25m I will not consider him "overpriced" because the fact we have spent that shows he is one of AVB / Levy's top choices and if they are willing to spend that to get the player they consider perfect for our club and that is one of their top choices then he is not overpriced. If you can't spend £25m on your top target who can you? Where as alot of people here are saying I hope we don't sign him for £25m Basically - If we do sign him for £25m he must be someone AVB and Levy consider the perfect man for the job and the right sigining to take us to the next level, that alone justifies that pricetag.
On Remy, I'm with Moorpheus, I'm not sure he's all that, apart from a couple of wonder strikes, what else did he do? He did have a few good games fair enough, chipped in with a few, but was anonymous in others. Benteke had a very good second half of the season for Villa and showed a lot of ability, but would Spurs risk paying more for him than Utd did for RvP - plus his wages etc - when he's still young and largely unproven? When you pay that kind of money you expect the finished article - like RvP.
Hardly comparable Lidl - RVP is 30 years old, with only a few years left at the top and little resale value. He would have commanded a much larger fee if he hadn't peaked so late due to being a sicknote for most of his career. RVP may be the finished article (despite a large goal drought this season) but he comes with a lot of baggage - age and injuries.
I agree. But unfortunately we don't have the kind of pull United have. We are in a position where we cant afford to try and find someone "on the cheap and hope it goes ok" but also still aren't big enough to pull players from the top European clubs. In an ideal world would I want us to spend £25m on Benteke, no, but the fact is if we don't build on last season we will lose Bale, Lloris, Sandro and probably Vertonghen to Champion's League clubs. At the minute I can't see any better options than Benteke and if we can afford the £25m I'd rather we spend it than take a step back.
I'm NOT doubting Benteke is worth signing but £25 million? Remember Darren Bent? Liverpool did the same with Carroll on the back of good half season. Is it worth the gamble?
Talking of Liverpool, I read a Twitter rumour that said they've had a bid of £22m for Benteke accepted. I can't find it now and no-one's retweeted it so it's likely BS. Thanks for saying it for me, Relayer. Ade was a huge disappointment last year, and there were a number of things that would have made even a reasonable fan lose patience with him. But neither of these two things means the chances of him bouncing back and having a great year this year are negligible--though the fans being sick of him might. In any case, making a definite move backward by getting rid of a striker who's been very successful at the top level and getting a cheap replacement is not a good idea. I'd rather take my chances on a Bentecke, who at least has scored 19 goals in the PL. As for Bale in the middle: yeah, maybe. The problem is we might be interested in repeating what worked so brilliantly the last third of last year, which was Bale with a free role in a 4-2-3-1 (with Ade as the 1...)
