Cheers Mikey. Didn't know his name but I've seen that action before, so I had an inkling. How he manages to keep the ball on line is quite an achievement, but, on the right day, I bet he gets a lot of turn with that action. Which for a fast-medium bowler is a real weapon.

As a reply video, here's Proctor in his pomp:

Well that was fun. Refereed a tournament and did the final. Screaming ab dabs at full time.

    0-0, goes into penalty shoot-out.

Team A need Team B not to score to win the shoot-out. Player runs up, keeper charges off the line, penalty goes wide.

I then order a retake. Scored. Team B go on to later win on penalties.

Then some parents come over to confront me after the game. "It's harsh and anal" was the first argument presented. Well isn't that my job, to be anal about things? Upholding he rules no matter what.

The second argument was "but no one else noticed!", referring to the parents and players on the halfway line. It's not their job to, and they have no responsibility or role in the decision making process of match officials.

Then when I told the parent to go and read the laws of the game because its in there, then he says "what for under 11s?!". It's an association football tournament. Football is football.

So after all that and having again explained it, the parents still wouldn't hear me out over it or just move on. Pathetic really.

Thanks for listening to me venting!

New Zealand popped over us on the manner of the win, putting Sri Lanka at the bottom. I know NZ beat us in the recent series, but I reckon we will beat them in this tournament.

I kind of want to get into this. I think it'd be fun laying down the law to angry parents.

At any age group, basic rules have to be enforced. Leniency can be shown whether to give a yellow card or not if it is more enthusiasm than maliciousness, but the law is quite clear on penalties.

I just kept calm and explained it. I knew it was right.

I did get irritated by daft comments such as "it's harsh/it's unfair" and "no one else saw".

    A) It is fair
    B) Does not matter if they didn't

It wouldn't have been fair if the other side had lost as a result of the goalkeeper not adhering to the rules of a penalty kick. Argh. :)

Well I heard you and you were absolutely right to hold your ground. Any game or event that becomes a matter of record after the result needs to have the rules followed. I presume the goalposts weren't spare coats or jumpers..? :)

Wow, that's fascinating, I've not seen anyone else do that on a consistent basis. I remember seeing someone try it and bounced off the pitch and went to second slip haha. Did he only have a short period of success or was he fairly inconsistent, because I've actually never heard of him before, although I suppose 1977 would put him in the middle of SA's Apartheid exclusion?

*EDIT* Just looked him up - 22000 First class runs, 48 centuries, 19.5 bowling average and 70 five wicket hauls... Wow...

I've quit reffing now, didn't get paid enough and wasn't committed enough to get to a higher level. I think my laid back sarcastic approach was not always successful.

I prefer being on the line in all honesty. A lot of people find that odd.

Nope. A proper final for the tournament. I think people forget sometimes that referees have no emotional investment with two teams. I couldn't care who wins the final, so long as I know that I did my part to ensure the game was fair. Perhaps it's not nice for Under 11s to experience that, but laws are laws. I'm just there to enforce them.

Very famous. One of the real greats, and yes that was his normal action and he took loads of wickets. And he was an all-rounder too, with a good batting average. Yeah, Apartheid did for him, just as it did for Hampshire's Barry Richards down the other end of the wicket in this video. After all, Richards could be argued to be one of the top three batsmen of all time, but was never able to show it internationally.

I like lining as well. Probably about the same as I enjoy being in the middle.

Yep, that's got to be the right way, whether it be Under 11s through to Seniors. I played in my school junior team from 8/9 years onward and the ref [who was usually the resident sports teacher] never gave any grace or favour. That wouldn't be cricket, err... I mean football. :)

Some parents are right pricks. I've encountered my fair share. One parent even argued with me when I sent off his son who clearly called me a ****.

I'd love to ref too, I would love to knock some sense into some of those kids who decide to mouth off to refs.

Wow, that's crazy. Just looked up his career stats too, to see if it brought consistent success. Average of below 20 in every form of the game... yikes. His FC batting average of 36.01 and bowling average of 19.53 is incredible, over 401 games at that.
