Huge respect to him as a manager, considering the length of his success I wouldn't rate anyone higher than him in the history of the game.

But boy am I bloody glad he's finally buggering off!

The timing makes sense: after the title chase has ended, but with one last home date on the calender. Glad we're scheduled an hour earlier on Sunday...I want to see the second half, because it'll be one hell of a send-off.

If it wasn't for George Lawrence, he may never have got the job and United may never have won all the trophies.

"Chicken" had the game of his life against Man Utd in the League Cup when we won 4-1. Le Tiss got the headlines for his two goals, but it was Lawrence who was MOTM.

Couple of days later, Ron Atkinson got the sack and the rest is history.

Agreed on him being intolerable at times, but I honestly think he's the best manager of all time, and it's been a privelage witnessing what he has achieved. Honestly thought he'd stay on til he kicked the bucket.

All I can say is, good luck to whoever takes up that seat.

Just announced: Manchester United fans to pay tribute to retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson with a minutes applause on 98 minutes

What a manager but a complete twat of a human being. That sums up my feelings for him.

What nostalgia - this Saturday, 11th May, is 30 years since Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to win the ECWC. I`ll be driving down to Sunderland - I`ll have a few beers to reminisce, and drink a toast to Fergie, in appreciation for a day out at the football, the likes of which I`ll never experienec again. Not with Aberdeen anyway.............
Cheers Fergie !

I reckon they could do a lot worse than Benitez. Chelsea fans don't appreciate a man who just gets on with the job quietly and successfully. Incidentally, I wonder if Nigel is kicking himself now? Maybe he should have waited for the merry-go-round to get going.

Good reminder, mate. I loved that Final with Strachan tearing lumps out of Real. Tell me, isn't this the Scottish equivalent of Saints winning the Champions League? What Fergie showed with Aberdeen is that it is possible to challenge the big boys. I hope Mauricio has the same drive!

<laugh> seriously? Do you understand his relationship with Fergie?

They can do a lot better too!

Maybe the same as Saints winning the Europa League, or whatever its called. The similarities are there - A shrewd manager, with a mix of young hungry, club-bred players and astute buys.

I remember that night well. Doug Rougvie (??) scaring the crap out of the Madrid players, the fans, the officials and anyone watching on TV!!!!

Why is David Moyes constantly linked to the job? It's just lazy journalism!

Is it not time for United to move on rather than just appoint the other angry, loyal Scotsman?

If they want someone with a real passion for the game, someone who feels every emotion the fans feel, who can hold a special relationship with his players, who acts ice cool in front of the media and above all else - can bring success from the academy right through to the first team, then Mr Jurgen Klopp is your man.

Some of the fans had a banner `Rougvie never lets a dago by`. Totally inappropriate, of course.
