I smoked up until 9 months ago, The smoking ban in pubs never bothered me as I have 2 young kids, so smoked outside at home so smoking outside in a pub i could live with, it also meant I smoked a hell of a lot less and got into less arguments over smoking in pubs.

These days I dont go out a lot at all just for the fact that alcohol is just so expensive in a pub, I am a Guinness drinker when out, and I can knock back a few, but £3.00 a pint maybe even more now, is just silly, £12 an hour, £60 a night (what i used to spend a week on cigs). I bought 36 cans of stella (which costs a bit in pubs as well) from the supermarket for £22 a week ago i still have 30 left (so I am not an alchy by any means I just cant go out and drink 2-3 pints. never have, never will).

I am pleased smoking has been banned from public transport and eating places though, nothing worse than sitting on a bus and someone sparks up and that was even when i used to smoke, or you are eating and someone does it but funnily enough i hate the smell of disinfectant, if I am eating and they start washing the floors etc, I feel like throwing up its worse than smoking for me.

funny that mate as a crate of heiniken at 6 % by volume over here costs 8. 90 euro with 4 euro back on the crate when returned

thats 4.90 euro for 24 bottles cant grumble and a liter and a half of of red lable is 23.99 euro cracking DIRK 111 is immense, if you ever come over here look for a DIRK 111 its cheaper than the duty free and cigs. im paying 25 euro for LM blue

As a lifelong non smoker and sufferer at the hands of selfish smokers, the pub ban was one of the best things I have ever seen happening in a social sense.

No longer do I wake up now with my clothes stinking of stale nicotine, my throat burning with the taste of smoke, or my eyes sore as **** from the rancid chemicals circulating around the pubs and clubs. I never have burn marks on my clothing where drunken smokers catch me while they inflict their self induced death wish upon us all. Pubs, theatres, cinemas, shops, restaurants, public buildings and public places are now healthy areas for everyone to attend and not the stranglehold of the pollutant bringers.

Should they ever bring it back (and they never will of course) that will be the end of me and pubs for sure. I wouldn’t be alone in that thought either. Far form it saving the pub industry it would kill it off totally in one fell swoop.

The thing is Cest I have never had any problem with your rights as a none smoker.
What about my rights?

I know which pub would be bouncing between a smoking and none smoking.
And it wouldn't just be smokers packing the place.

You have every right to smoke in pubs so long as my rights not to inhale your filth; have my clothes ruined and my health effected isn't infringed either. You see my standing in a pub not smoking DOESN'T harm your health but you standing there smoking DOES effect me.

Pubs have been on the decline for years and pubs have always closed. In my town, more pubs have OPENED since the ban than have closed. Pubs that struggle are too expensive and usually **** holes who don't invest in their punters. Bringing back smoking will kill off the industry totally and lead to multiple law suits against breweries and pubs for health related illnesses for staff and punters alike and rightly so.

Your 5 or 10 mins in a smoking shelter outside a pub every hour or so, is a very small price to pay for both mine and millions of other non smoking sufferers future health.

Smokers always talk about their rights but never the rights of non smokers not to inhale their ****. In many smokers minds, its always the non smoker that should feck off and not go into the pub, so the smoker can selfishly enjoy polluting the **** out of the world at his or her free will.

I've suffered for some 27 years or so in stinking smoke filled pubs and now its a joy to be free from it. You will find little sympathy from me that you now have to go outside to smoke mate, just like smokers haven't given a **** about me for all that time.

I do agree with MR here but how do you police it (wrong word but...)

20 pubs in a town, 3 are smoking pubs 17 are not the 3 will be packed and bring in lots of cash, the 17 will be sparse and wont.

20 pubs in a town, 17 smoking and 3 none smoking, the 3 none smoking will be packed the 17 smoking will be sparse.

the sparse ones will change their rules to get on the good/profit side but then it will go 17-3 the other way 3 will be packed 17 sparse.

+ my wife smokes so i will probably end up in the smoking pubs anyway, I have had a few cans tonight and I am dieing for a cig, but if i have 1 i know that will be me hooked again, but i can stand with a bunch of smokers and not be bothered 1 bit its just the alcohol.

The one thing i hated when i was a smoker were none smoking signs so i do know where MR is coming from, but saying that the best thing i have ever done was to stop (and hopefully stay quit but that is easier said than done).

I have stated from the outset that I agree none smokers have rights and shouldn't have to put up with me smoking.

But by the same token I wasn't dragging people in off the streets to put up with all my filth as you put it!
They were making the decision to enter a pub or club where they knew people would be smoking.
They still had a choice.
They chose to put up with the filth to join friends and family who were smoking and drinking.
To then whinge about it after the fact is laughable.
No one forced them to do it.

Smoking hasn't impacted my health in any way and I have no intention of stopping something I enjoy.

Won't be long before pubs are re-cycled with separate rooms named bar, smoke-room, lounge thus giving the customer a choice of where to socialise. This could be a brilliant return to the 40s and 50s.

I think it all really stems from the fact that smoking is a privilege, not a right. With this in mind, it is easy to construct laws against it. Most of my life, I grew up around a serial smoker (my mum) and it was foul. I must have been about 19 when the smoking ban kicked in so only drank in smoking bars for 1 year (it may be more but you never know who is policing these sites ). The change was instant. I hated being anywhere near a smoker while trying to enjoy my pint. The new law meant I could enjoy my drink, watch the match and not come home reeking of ***s.

With all that in mind and the fact my mindset is the same as other non smokers (and most likely campaigners and politicians who do not smoke) a law against it was always coming thus smoking outside. If you really are dead set against it, fight it or stop smoking. My mum quit.

After all we are talking about choice.
If people don't want to be near smokers don't go where they are.

If there were smoking and non smoking bars, the smoking bars would be packed, including non smokers, and the non smoking bars would have a handful of non smokers whining that the smokers were all in the smoking bars.

We should have the choice, it is that simple, but we don't so **** it!

Personally, I quite like smoking outside, have always done it in my own home anyway so was no biggie for me, also, I have done some of my best pulling whilst outside having a snout, not to be underestimated!

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. This is not about smokers rights, or non-smokers rights. This is about PROPERTY rights.
The bottom line is this.
WHO IS ANYONE OR ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY TO HAVE THE AUDACITY TO TELL ME, OR ANYONE, WHAT THEY CAN DO IN THEIR OWN PRIVATE PROPERTY WHEN IT DOES NOT AFFECT ANYONE WHO DOES NOT CHOOSE TO GO THERE? You do not have a right to a smoke free bar. You do not have a right to a smoke free McDonald's. If you want it build it. If there is a demand for it then it will come which is how the free market works.

This is not the end. This is not the beginning either. It is another stop in the ongoing campaign to turn the entire country into a nanny state. It is not right. It is not fair. It is more government intrusion into our private lives and into private enterprise. It is an attack on civil liberties and people are too blind to see it.

WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE? Are Happy Meals being banned next? Perhaps no salt? No drinks over 16 ounces? Last I checked, heart disease IS the number one killer so why would it be far fetched to go there? When will this government control reach the home? When is the government going to tell me I can't fry my potatoes in a certain oil in my own kitchen because it's unhealthy?
Yes, the people will adjust all right. But this smoking ban is NOT a good thing.
