This wreaks of Mike and Derek finally realising they got it wrong. They've simply got Wonga to take the climb down for them!

Just picking up a little on that, Virgin Money haven't made any redundancies in the north east, they have in fact guaranteed all jobs for 3 years, more than most/any companies are doing at the moment.

Already picked up on this but I'll say here, I think it's naive to think Slim Mike gives a **** what any of us think!

Have they really got it wrong?

They've just generated millions of £s of sponsorship to name the stadium what it was always called... money for nothing - genius if you ask me.

An important point to consider..... if you have bairns it is possible that the kids shirts will not be allowed to display the sponsor as it relates to an over 18's activity (i.e. taking out loans). I know the mackem tops for kids were without the sponsor for Tombola... albeit that was gambling....

Yes I think they categorically got it wrong. I think you are giving them way way too much credit. You'd have to be surpremely naive to think this is the plan they had in mind all along. They've just got lucky for me and I'll be honest and say it is a quite brilliant way of appeasing the fans, getting more money and getting fans to accept an unpopular sponsor.

Personally I think the money is for the shirt deal. This is just a little cunning plan they've dreamed up as a way round the issue of their renaming faux pas.

This. It's a PR stunt at the most basic level, something to get us (the fans) on the side of the sponsor.

I've had a change of heart since beginning this thread. Come to think of it, I'm now pretty much in favour of Wonga. Its a short-term lender, emphasis on the short-term. I read that if one draws £100 on day 1, and on day 10 the entirety is repaid, the interest is £11.12 - not too unreasonable for a "short-term" lender.

The problem is when people use these companies for a long-term fix, but in my opinion there has to be some form of cognitive impairment in those who rely on these companies to solve their long-term financial constraints.

Also, the morality issue is being touched on heavily, but i don't see the difference between this and gambling/casino's sponsoring teams being immoral to those with an addiction, or alcohol companies prying on alcoholics. We were sponsored by the Breweries! Didn't see much of an uproar then.

In my opinion, i think this is just an event that many fans/journo's try and hold against Mike Ashley etc for his previous mistakes. I would like to think he's running quite a good business model now.

    Thoughts?

My thoughts are that gambling and boozing are fine. Indeed they are great when done together! So get off their case! <ale><cheers><laugh>

The "short term" thing is their way of justifying their existence. If that was the case why do they let people spiral? Parasites for me but as I've said on another thread if it gets us a new CB who gives a ****. I could find something morally reprehensible about just every sponsor there is.

Warm Pouch - its precisely that last sentence that tends me to overlook the supposed downsides of this particular sponsor.

And the reason we have dodgy, multi-billionaire owners in the premier league.

May have been mentioned already but I smiled at the thought of Shola.

@lee_ryder: One of the best things about that press conference was that Shola was in the room absolutely loving the news about SJP #nufc
