I wouldn't say it's fragile confidence with Fryatt because in interviews and in training he seems pretty fine. I think it's more on the lines of his decision making. When he's through on goal and he takes to long deciding whether to round the keeper, shoot, pass etc etc and then ends up doing none and running into the keeper. We can't blame his patch of no goals around December/January last year on confidence because nobody was scoring, it was adjustment to newer styles of play under Barmby.

Yes but it is my opinon, I thought that is what a forum is for and as for smart arsed responses I think you should look at some of your own respnses.<ok>

It's more likely to be a "we've only got two wingers in the squad" thing than a worry over Aluko. Aluko's registration is just in a pile of beurocracy.

Thanks, I'll have a look at some of my respnses! Yes, your opinion, but not very well founded. There are a lot of people that jump on the McLean isn't very good bandwagon - the only argument they have is he doesn't score enough? There is more to his game than than that, if you can't see it and others can't see it that constantly criticise then I suggest you look at what attributes are required for a centre forward, goals being a small part. He brings energy, enthusiasm, a willing to graft, aerial threat, hassling the opposition high up the field, decent range of passing. As I have repeatedly pointed out, no ****ing striker would have scored many in our formation last season.

McLean is a 10 plus goal a season striker, who needs to play up front with a 20 plus goal a season striker, it's quite simple really, he's a Championship equivalent of Heskey, hard to play against, never gives you a minutes time and space. Exactly the sort of player for this division.

Before someone pipes up with Barmby was going to get rid, well that's because he only played one up front and nothing to do with his ability (square pegs round holes etc)

That's pretty poor to resort to a typo when you have few in your response. Goals are not a "small" part of a forwards play.

As Aluko is now available, if Fryatt was fit do you think Mclean would be in the starting eleven? If you do i suggest you would be one of the very very few. It's that simple. He isnt first choice. Why? Because Steve Bruce and Nick Barmby didnt think him good enough.

The job of a striker is to score goals and quite simply Mclean doesn't do that.

Mclean doesn't score enough, doesn't hold the ball up enough, doesn't control the ball enough, doesn't cross it enough, doesn't make enough assists. I would accept if he helped others score but he didn't, he made two assists throughout last season. Yes you need energy and willingness, but i can tell you now out of the three teams that went up if you can name me one of them who had a player player over 35 games on the wing and upfront with such a poor record and there excuse for him starting was energy i will retract my arguement and love Mclean. But i know for a fact you won't as they all want goals and assists from your striker. Fair if you want top ten good on you, but we don't.

McLean is a support striker. But you continue criticising YOUR team and some of the vital components in it. You tell them they are **** enough often enough and they will be <ok>

As we're paying him quite handsomely to be 'proud', then yes.

    I like McLean.
I think he's one of those players who we would miss if he left purely based on the shift he puts in.
Granted his goals to games ratio is poor compared to the likes of Fryatt but how often do you see or have you seen Fryatt backing up and providing defensive cover for the fullbacks on both flanks?
You have two types of Striker.
You have Grafters and then you have Finishers.
Fryatt = Finisher, McLean = Grafter.

    We should not sell him.

I didn't suggest he would be in the starting 11 did I? Goals are a small part of a strikers game, particularly, key word here, you're a SUPPORT striker. In strike partnerships you tend to have one 20 + and one 10 + a season strike force. McLean does a lot of the donkey work that no one else in our team would be willing to do. He is perhaps one of the reasons we didn't concede many, by helping defend from the front.

Why not judge him this season, when it's clear we'll be more focused on scoring goals. Other than Fryatt and Koren - nobody scored enough last season, more to do with tactics and formation employed than individuals. <ok>

A sensible post, from someone who clearly understands the importance of players like McLean. No further comment required <ok>

We're talking goals here, as it's all anyone seems to be able to compute.

    Lots of goals = good
    Few goals = ****

I think that's the formula anyway.

I also didn't suggest he wouldn't be in the starting 11. Seriously, give up now, you're just making things up.
