'Hull' is infact a small area of Hessle Road but because of 'Kingston Upon Thames' calling themselves Kingston, the locals inherited the name 'Hull' instead. <ok>

Hull used to have two parishes 'Kingston Upon Hull' and 'Sculcoates' until Sculcoates became part of Kingston upon Hull in 1974.

Also just another little bit of information there is 29 areas within Kingston upon Hull.

that can't be right. there are 4 at the kc and on most football pitches.

I just read my way through this thread, thinking it was going to be a boring JB saga. Instead, it became pretty interesting.

Another thing - North Yorkshire/South Durham became Cleveland and then mutated into Teesside.

Humberside (as far as I'm aware) was purely descriptive - like Thames-side, Tyneside, Severnside, Clydeside. Then was an artificial new county. Now only exists in names such as plods and ambulances. Plus some companies (?).

i think you ll find that the only place that can truly be called Hull is the original settlement at the mouth of the River Hull known, and named, Wyke on Hull by the monks at Meaux. I believe it is famed as a landing spot for illegal wine from Italy before 1190, at which point I believe the Royals wanted a bit of that wine action so gave it a charter in favour of the bustling town of Hedon.

The Hull Daily Mail got a front page scoop and Radio Humberside paddled in on the story afterwards as usual. Wyke on Hull is indeed mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but i dont think Humberside was at all so maybe it didnt exist before 1974 after all!

There used to be an area called Haltemprice, it was scrapped in 1974 and there is longer a specific area called Haltemprice(which was the question asked).

In 1997, following a review of parliamentary seats, a new seat was created that covered a large area from Anlaby, to Cottingham, to Howden, they decided to describe the area from it's outer edge at Howden, to it's other outer edge in area that 23 years earlier had been called Haltemprice, so it was named Howden and Haltemprice.

If you got in a cab and said 'take me to Haltemprice' he wouldn't know where the **** to go, as there's no specific place called Haltemprice.

The question was answered correctly and once again, you just look like a contradictory, obnoxious dimwit.

Ner, ner ner.....

An area can be place just as a village, town or city can be.

Perhaps you ought to express yourself more concisely then you wouldn't get so frustrated?

First I'm from Hull
Second I'm from Yorkshire
Third I think Bullard is a first class twat
And last but not least Humberside is simply common. End of.

You're missing the point, the whole discussion isn't about whether it's common or not, it's about how long it's been common for.

No, Haltemprice and Howden is a parliamentary constituency that covers and area from Anably all the way to Goole. The now defunct area of Haltemprice was just the area around Anlaby, Willerby and Kirkella.

I remember when I was a kid there was a sign between Anlaby Park road and Anlaby common where Haltemprice boundary was, near Scales farm where I would go and buy curd for my mum. Now I am showing my age.

And Hessle and Cottingham ...................... although Hessle was subhumed into Hull & Hessle to let in one Alan Johnson MP ...... but the old Haltemprice included both Hessle and Cottingham ........... and Skidby and the likes.

Lots of arguing amongst ourselves at this time of year I see.....

Blimey, I remember that sign, right near the place that did our milk deliveries at the start of anlaby common.
