Why? They will get their share if they choose independence. We will just stick another solitary soilder on Rockall again to reaffirm our territorial rights if they want to get snotty and it will be the Royal Navy that patrolls their waters anyway.
This could actually save Scottish football. When the TV money gets re-negotiated they will get F'all. Players will not want to go to Celtic because its non competative and the wages Celtic will be able not pay will be much reduced. It will probably even things up and make it a more competative league in years to come. If Rangers were smart they would apply to join the English League, Conference??? win that get in the football league and then in 10 years time they might end up in the EPL. I can see AFC Wimbledon managing it eventualy and they are a much smaller club.
Just been having that exact conversation mate, would only take a couple extra years, and then they could in theory be in a proper league. That would really **** the teams that voted against them as well.
This attitute if the clubs voting against Rangers being the ones in the wrong is a strange one. Rangers cheated those teams with money it didnt have. In the 80s the successful clubs were Celtic, Dundee and Aberdeen. All three nearly went to the wall in the 90s trying to stay competitive within their own means with a football team that was using money that wasnt its own to buy players like Laudrup, De Boer etc. As someone who doesnt give a ****e about Scottish football, I still think Rangers deserve to rot.
We seem to be forgetting who Rangers have robbed here - the taxman and, by extension, taxpayers i.e. us! I say **** 'em. And, incidentally, we should give independence to all Scottish counties that don't have a coastline. That way, the oil stays in the Union. Simples...
Mate, I absolutely don't think they are in the wrong, in fact I think it's admirable. Looking at the bigger picture though, it could be a coffin nail for some who are on the line, and will miss the massive income of 2 lots of Rangers fan influxes a season. It's a really unnatural scenario, where by doing the right thing, clubs could suffer, if you know what I mean?
Not sure about the whole business models of the whole thing but apparently alot of season ticket sales are up (probably because the teams now sense the chance to be able to actually win something). Also there is talk that they may go PPV and that could actually turn into a larger revenue stream than the Sky deal currently on offer
All fair mate, I won't profess to know the ins and outs of all of the concerned clubs finances, but one thing is certain and that is that Rangers & Celtic at the big draw in Scottish football. Celtic, and no blame lies at their door, now have a walkover, and a second side may get a CL qualifier (do Scotland get 2 slots?) but they will be way below the standard to compete. The TV deal being reduced would surely be a bigger loss than the increase in hate receipts? I know it's not like the English deal, but it's still surely more than maybe 2000 season tickets at 300 quid or whatever?
We start talking about the possible demise of an historical football club with a support base around the world and end up talking about finances and income. Supporters of RFC are the sufferers here. Just an observation.
Fan power taking over so it seems as a lot of fans have told their clubs they will not buy season tickets if they vote Rangers in. Financially Scottish football is ****ed. Without the Old Firm, they're ganbanged.
Have to disagree with you there Comm. Scotlands population is only 5 million. Fat Salmond wants the best of both worlds. They will still be massively dependant on Westminster money. The last time they sounded this out only 5% wanted to go for it. They do not have the industry mate. Outside of the Glasgow area & offshore all they really have is agriculture & fishing, both of which are ****ed anyway. And then there's the armed forces. What the **** is gonna happen there?
I don't disagree but the perceived wisdom here seems to be that if Rangers fold all of the money that the away fans used to bring to other clubs will disappear. I don't think that this necessarily follows - at the end of the day all of their supporters are football fans and like going to the football, are they all en masse going to decide to knock it on the head and not bother anymore? More likely they would find themselves a smaller team (they are not going to give anything to the existing SPL teams) to support and spend their hard earned on them and therefore it could work in favour of the Scottish League generally. I do admit it would take a number of years before any true benefit is felt and in that time the SPL could become a non-event. As for independance - let them have it. If it means that Berwick Rangers have to now play in the Northern Counties league then so be it.
As a Scot I dont want independence. I like the fact that we as a people have our own identity. One thing i would like is for a greater part of the oil revenue to stay in scotland, as it all goes down to London, which is then handed out to people on the dole. I would like to see the infrastructure in Scotland improved, and get all these ****in roadworks finished.
