You can claim British citizenship. But then you can claim that if you've lived in England for 5 years. We have an au pair, she's Spanish. Can now claim citizenship and be considered British. Everyone (including her) knows she s Spanish though. So being born in ni means you can claim citizenship of britain (can also claim Irish citizenship, or both) but doesn't mean you are from Britain. It's just what goes on a passport
Born in the U.K = British
Born in the east Belfast =Wannabe British

Even those people born in Ireland?
Not true. Born in northern Ireland and you have a choice on what nationality you can claim. It's not automatic. You can't be from britain though as you are from ireland. If you claim British citizenship( which legally you can if you want) you are still from ireland.

Good Friday agreement makes it the "birthright" of anyone born there to consider themselves british, Irish or both. They are not from Britain though. Can claim citizenship from day one. But then again an American or Brazilian or (insert any county) can do likewise after 5 years of living there. They are NOT from Britain thoug. Just have the right to claim citizenship called british. As rebel and you have pointed out it should be called UKish really

Oh it SHOULD be called UKish, but it's not, it's called British
The citizenship name yes. Because people from the North of Ireland who chose to choose citizenship as a result of being from that part of the uk are not part of Britain. So it's a confusing name for people- as you've proven
Nothing confusing about it. If you are born in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland you are British.

It's the birthright of the everyone born there to chose British, Irish or both If you want to claim british citizenship you can. I'm not denying that. So knock yourself out. You are not from Britain. You are a British citizen from Ireland.

Canada is in north America. It's not America though. Britain is Britain an Ireland is Ireland. Part of Ireland just happens to be governed by the uk government at present so the people can claim citizenship of the controlling nation. Doesn't change the fact it's not in Britain though. If it were you wouldn't have the uk. It would just be Britain
