I think Lateralus is probably the best album I own. The Disposition/Reflection/Triad ending is cool, but I think their best work is in tracks like The Patient, Schism and Parabola. I wouldn't call that over-hyped at all; quite the opposite if anything.
Cedric-Bixler Zavala is a scientologist I think, but I can get over it. Maynard Keenan just pretends to be weird.
Just to jump in on this if you don't mind lads; Ignore Mars Volta, the newly reformed At the Drive-In is what you need to be listening to.
By over-hyped I just meant that its generally considered their best album but, personally, I find it too pretentious and think AEnima is far better. Just my opinion!
Have you heard The Smile Sessions? My mind = blown. For me now their albums rank: Pet Sounds > SMiLE> Friends = Sunflower > Surf's Up = Today!
As soon as I saw Joe's post I was going to say the same thing. Brilliant band, the Mars Volta are as well, but At The Drive-In is a different level. Carrying on with a similar genre of music, one of my guilty pleasures (though not so guilty, it's unashamed) is Abba. Brilliant group!
Never really liked Tool much but oddly am a big fan of A Perfect Circle. I'm a big John Lennon Fan but their cover of Imagine is immense and I dont generally Like Lennon covers. They make me all pretentious and angry. Maynard James Keenan is a bit of a genius though. Other than that, I love Julien K (if you are also a fan, you are my new best friend), VAST, Depeche Mode, The Black Keys, Lost Prophets, Gary Numan, Motley Crue, The Doors (probably my favourite - I was lucky enough to see them, without Jim obviously, about 5 years ago), Faith no more (Mike Patton another genius), Guns 'n' Roses, Dopamine, Marilyn Manson, Suede, Blur, Adam Ant, Keith Caputo & many more
Any Saints-supporting bands/singers? I was always under the impression that Craig David and some of Coldplay were.
Reef! Kenwyn House (guitarist) is a Saints fan
Love this song. It is a rule with me and my flat mate that should this song come on the radio or TV then we have to automatically drop everything we are doing and go out on the piss. Fortunately it doesn't get much airplay anymore.
Had the Smile Sessions for my birthday. The "unplugged" version of "Surf's Up" is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs ever.
Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Ocean Colour Scene, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Yeti, Nick Armstrong and the Thieves, The Delays (saints fans), Paul Weller, Libertines, Ramones, Clash, MC5 and Queen !
There are certain things that should never ever be disclosed in public! But if they are your thing, you'll be delighted to know that if you ring IKEA customer service they play Abba as the hold music. Ring at a busy time and you get a whole album!
As a confirmed Beach Boys fan, I'm going to have to admit to a No, there. You'd think I'd have heard everything they've released, but I'm a lazy bleeder, and I don't have bottomless pocket either. Must put in a word for Holland there, amongst your excellent list. Spotify here I come again. EDIT: By the way, Lamballana, I think Beddy's being a bit harsh on you. Excellent thread. And some of the songs these bands have produced have been on a Saints Tannoy, down through the years, so I don't see what he's got to gripe about.
You should definitely Spotify. The out-takes and rough cuts are certainly interesting, but the true star is the approximation of the album at the beginning from Our Prayer -> Good Vibrations. It's probably not what it would have been had it been released at the time, but it's the closest we have now and it's fantastic, it's actually quite sad to see how close Brian came to finish it, it's only a couple of vocal takes off the 2004 version.
Not bands as such, I've decided to list music artists that have changed the way I think and feel through their music and songwriting...in no particular order: John Lennon, Paul Weller, Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar), Billy Bragg, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Prince, James Mercer (The Shins), Pete Townsend, Shane McGowan, Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Graham Parker, Andy Partridge (XTC), Donald ***an (Steely Dan), Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) David Bowie.
