Don’t know why Conor Sellars is still coaching the under-21s.
I’d be wanting to know what he’s achieved if I was his boss wouldn’t you?
Take Wadsworth
Given a one year deal
So must be a prospect
Then this season given another one year deal
Why? Surely 21 years old he must be on the verge of the first team? But nothing so
I imagine he’ll be released at the end of this season
I assume there will be others like this

That’s a monumental waste of money isn’t it?

what if hes just not good enough though?
even as a coach you can improve them, but if theres not enough ability to get to the standard, what can you do
maybe hes one of the best of a bad bunch , but never going to be good enough to get to the level
thats more the scouting isnt it, not the coach?

But shouldn’t you have known that last season? Why give him another deal this season?

I agree that it's strange and frustrating to see the constant flow of players coming through the academy and not coming close to making it, but it's always been the reality for the majority of players.

I'm sure there's more the academy can do to improve, but it probably comes down to investment first and foremost.

It isn’t the majority it’s all of them
Year on year no one has come through

Why is it boring to discuss the hull city academy on the hull city board ? And why we aren’t producing any players?
I was referring to two posters conducting a fingernails down a blackboard insufferable back and forth about nothing. Proper discussion about the state of our academy products - all good.

As for what I think - I think it’s harsh to say that because we aren’t promoting academy youngsters to the first team right now, they must be poor and the academy a failure. We are embarked on an unexpected promotion push and blooding youngsters would be a massive risk for Sergej. He got away with it with McCarthy, but repeating that would be extremely risky.

In previous seasons the barrier has been pretty obvious - Acun’s insistence on signing multiple players shuts the door on younger prospects. I think this is probably affecting the attractiveness of our academy at the moment.

This is correct. Tony Pulis has actually done a documentary for Sky called 'Chasing the Dream' and that explains that over 90% of academy kids dont ever play a professional first team game.

Its not necessarily that we are terrible, more to do with the wider system, the want and needs of first team managers who's jobs are on the line and the attitudes of the players themselves who think they're ballers because they play in front of 35 people on a Tuesday afternoon at Rochdale.

As I've said in another post, a pathway system linking to development centres around the area with clear direction from rhe club through to these groups, regular fixtures of high standard, eg other academies, development centres ans JPL sides would keep the kids hooked in and allow for a much wider net to be cast in the area. You could even take them to Holland, France and Belgium for international experience and training camps.

The club would need to be willing to invest in it of course, you'd be looking at a 6 figure sum each year, but Leeds are running development squads and have a higher yield on players making the pro ranks than many. 2 of them play for us, maybe 3 if Coyle came through there.

As far as I know we have a satellite group over the bridge. Thats it.

I think JIm was spot on earlier when he said that if we were serious about developing talent a manager needs to be in place. I was listening to the 1904 podcast yesterday and they weer talking about Pandurs kicking, the fundamentals of kicking a dead ball and it just strikes me reading the posts on the academy more especially those with concise thoughts, that we are sadly lacking on coaching at all levels at the club.

there's a lad in my youngests u10 team who's training with the shef u academy and even at that age the pressure they're putting on him to perform every game is mental, I've seen him this season lose the smile on his face when he plays, it's kind of heartbreaking and I'm glad neither of my 2 are quite at the level to worry academies, unless you're in that 10% they can be utterly miserable places and cause kids to fall out with football forever

Here's one for ya, if there's such a gulf between players at the top of the game and those kicking about in reserves of even non league how come Mansfield, Macclesfield and Grimsby managed to beat Premier league teams.
Maybe there are players/just as good but never get given the chance. See Jamie Vardy for example, and the 16 year old who came on for Arsenal.

Just bored of it all and playing devil's advocate.
I think it's because, very occasionally, anyone can beat anyone in a one off cup game - should they play each other fifty times they're never winning more than once or twice.

Yea
most pros at any level are capable of a top class performance
But the top players and teams do it 90 times out of a 100
Consistency

Its sad isn't it. We just need to let the kids play.
I was once moaning to my mate who is a high level coach, he had come to watch my u10s last year. We couldnt warm up, the opposition was deliberately trying to mess us about and we didnt even have a goal to use to warm up with. He turned around and laughed and told me about a day he went to watch man utd u10s v Leeds. Leeds were warming up with cones, ladders, tons of coaches all with clip boards and tactics boards. Man utd coaches were sat having a coffee whilst the kids were playing dodgeball, and the keeper was taking pens at an outfield player. He asked the man utd coaches why they dont warm up, his reply was 'theyre 10 mate'. Man utd won that game 5-0.

Since that day I've never done a warm up with my team who are now going into u12s next year. There performance has never dropped and they seem to be really relaxed and have played really well since that day. So clearly I was putting too much on them just by setting the scene with a structure warm up.

Obviously when they get to the 18s and 21s they should be able to handle pressure but I see your point and wonder how many we have ruined my the time they get to 16? Ive certainly changed my approach to coaching because of the mental side.

As a side note I would highly recommend any young player or junior level coach to read soccer tough by Dan Abrahams. Game changer in the way you approach the game mentally.
