Whitmore was during my City wilderness years (81 until they got promoted to the premier to the PL) but others may be interested in this article about a Jamaican club that he is the manager of.
So, it was on brand for Mount Pleasant to go behind in the tie twice, with O&M’s second goal, scored in the 69th minute, putting them in front on away goals.

It is at times like this when you need a hero to step forward, and Mount Pleasant had two. One was substitute Tyreek Magee, whose fine left-foot finish from the edge of the box with only three minutes left in regulation time made it 2-2 on the night, and the other was the man who sent him on, Mount Pleasant manager Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore.

As a player, Whitmore helped Jamaica qualify for their only appearance at the World Cup proper, where he scored both goals in the Reggae Boyz’s victory over Japan, the greatest day in Jamaican football.

His performances at the 1998 World Cup in France eventually led him to Hull City, where he turned a one-week trial into a three-year spell that was occasionally brilliant and never less than memorable, before shorter spells with Livingston in Scotland and then back in England with Tranmere Rovers.

If this sounds like The Athletic is damning him with faint praise, then profuse apologies — Whitmore was wonderful, he just got to England too late in his career and too early for English football to know what to do with him. None of this matters in Jamaica, though, as he played 120 games for the national side, managed them twice, and is now manager of the country’s best club side.

The Athletic spoke to him on the morning of the final’s second leg, when he said that “rustiness” caused by the team’s long lay-off following Hurricane Melissa was partly to blame for a failure to finish off O&M in the first leg.

“But it’s OK, we get another chance at them tonight,” says Whitmore.

When asked how he, the team and Jamaica were coping with the aftermath of the hurricane, which smashed into the island on October 27, he said the recovery was “a work in progress… everyone is trying to get back to normal, but it’s not going to be fast”.

A stoic response from a proud Jamaican. Melissa’s record-breaking gusts and extreme rainfall killed at least 45 people and more than a million animals. Thousands of buildings were damaged, agricultural land flooded, power generators knocked out, and whole communities devastated, particularly on the island’s west coast, where Whitmore grew up.

“I can’t complain when I see what has happened to others,” he explains. “My sister’s place in Montego Bay got hit very hard. The whole downstairs gone, the fridge, stove, furniture, all of it.

“But all Jamaicans are behind us now — they want us to show the world that we can still get things done. I’m sure we’ll have a bumper crowd when we play in the Champions Cup. We want Inter Miami and Messi.”

There was a young fella working behind the bar at a hotel I stayed at in Jamaica once, who claimed Theo had told him, while he was a youth player at Seba United, that he had the potential to be the best midfielder Jamaica had ever produced.

I asked him, if that was the case, what was he doing working behind the bar in a hotel, he said 'Theo released me'. <laugh>

See Liam Rosenoir is getting a lot of stick from Merson on Sky this morning re his tactics of playing 5 at the back and not going for it against Arsenal right from the off and not from 60 mins. But in the comments section the majority of Chelsea fans agree that Liam got it spot on. Looks like he is making a go of it at the moment.

Apparently he played a back 3/5 a lot at Strasbourg, which I was surprised by when I heard that because he always said with us that he didn't want to play that shape except for certain in-possession scenarios because it makes it hard to press high as he wants his teams to.

If merson thinks he did something wrong that's even more proof he did the right thing.

Just had coffee with Harry Wood's Dad.. (Shelbourne)... seems during this window Luton were trying very hard to sign him, the issue was that City have a buy back option/sell on fee and seemingly they were playing silly beggars... he's out of contract in the summer so City have missed out on some money...

Heard Will Jarvis is on his way to join him.

Weird that LOI contracts can expire in the summer, you'd think the teams would ensure they have their player tied up for the full season at least.

I think he signed a two year deal during the summer window, that might explain it... has Jarvis been getting good reports at Notts County anyone...?

You sure it's not expiring at the end of Shelbourne's season and his Dad just misspoke?

21 appearances and 2 assists last season, made 2 this season and hadn't played for them since November. Didn't kick on.

Signed a two year deal at Shelbourne now so hopefully he can show what he can do. Think he's found his level though.

Was it you that's mentioned his dad before? Always seems to have a chip on his shoulder about City based on these tidbits, which probably isn't unusual for the family of an academy player who doesn't make it.

McAauley Snelgrove's dad wasn't too happy with City either.

He's not our player, if Shelbourne wanted to sell him to Luton, it's nothing to do with us (the embargo would prevent us from exercising any buyback option, so it's a non-issue).

I loved Whitmore (and Ian Goodison). I was probably about 11 when Theo joined and he felt like a real galaticos type of signing; stylish and silky.

No he definitely said in the summer... as someone said below, he's not a fan of City because of how they treat him and reading between the lines (may be wrong) it was the sell on fee that was the killer for Shelbourne. Maybe our relationship with Shelbourne soured, who knows. I didnt push for more info...

Snelgrove works for the Tigers Trust now so he must be on reasonable terms with the club. He was prominent at the Question of Sport event tonight.

I don't think MS minded, but his dad sure did. Just wanted the best for his lad and was frustrated seeing him loaned out to the four corners of the Earth.

Perhaps said a lot that he needed loans out far and wide to get a gig?

It's sad when a young lad doesn't make it, but we're not a f*cking charity.
