Interesting!

I know the square root of f*** all. And I know no one connected with the club, and never have done. I don't even know what's for tea most days.

But someone I know who is not remotely interested in football told me something similar a month or two ago, when he was in among a few of us in a pub.

Pinch of salt and all that, he might have completely misunderstood whatever it was he heard and he didn't elaborate. But he's a good sort ( very well educated as it happens and old enough to be sceptical about gossip of any kind) . And he is no bullshitter, so you never know.....

With a project this big, and with so many involved, it's not surprising info is coming out.

Plans have to go to the council etc, and it's not exactly top secret, so things will have to be discussed.

In fact it's possibly beneficial for interest to grow, not to mention investment.

I think I'd struggle to hold my **** together if we announce expanding to over 60k and do it of a Xhaka-type, next level (pun accepted) quality.
It would kill the mags. They hated the SOL being bigger than the landfill so clagged that extension on just to be bigger and now it's said to be in a right state with concrete cancer.

For all the bullshit about the Saudis and investment, all the bollocks about a new ground, if we extend the SOL to be bigger than Skunks Park while they're stuck there getting lower gates than us in a rapidly decaying stadium, they'd never be able to stomach it. It would destroy them.

I dont believe KLD is fkn about. Its both East & South if rumours are to be believed.
I wonder if KLD wants to make any development of the sol include aspects that will mean it is used by the community more than twice a month...Community Hub,bars ,small scale music venue, cinema ect ..That would involve some land the club doesn't own but wants to , such as part of car parks .It does make sense to make the East stand the jewel of the sol and that i think would involve using car park land that we don't own.

Reading this and looking how professionally things have been on vast majority of KLD's ownership! Ironically the cup game about them lot is the one **** up where they royally ****ed up and it baffles at what they were thinking!

Then compare that to their ownership, they are far from professional and the one thing that's papering over it is the fact they are so rich they can spank money everywhere! We all know its all they wanted from Ashley! **** all the other nosie and bullshit! They wanted to be able to say we are competing with top teams for the most expensive players! They still haven't reached the level on that front they think they deserve! But they are more wary of crying about it because the Saudis are spending on the first team and they don't want to risk upsetting their overlords!

Apart from the first team spending everything else seems to be neglected and being left to go to pot!

I'd take KLD's ownership over their anyway, without taken the Saudi regime into account! KLD gives a feeling of building foundations and really being involved and caring about what happens at the club if he decides he has had enough he will ensure its sold to someone willing to carry on the work ( no guarantees obviously but he will care imo!). Then their owners (PIF nothing to do with the state honest, unless we are talking about something where its beneficial to be part of it!) I could prattle on but it just likes they are cluess and/or disinterested!

P.S take.Saudi regime into it and we are definitely in the better position!
A couple of friends in pub pre-Leeds were saying Saudis are sniffing around Barcelona...

Now that would be interesting

As I have said previously we can add 15,000 relatively easily and cost effectively to the SOL thanks to Sir Bobs, vision with the land and the design of the SOL. We could go even higher with a further tier to the West Stand (dreamland I know).

For the mags to add 15,000 to their capacity they have to build a new stadium at likely £2b plus and fights with those protecting valuable parkland, or undertake a very costly extension taking consideration of listed buildings and metro infrastructure not to mention works to address issues with their previous works.

If we can maintain our current momentum and add the south and east extensions and take us up to 64,000 we will have real opportunities to expand our fan base.

I love the clubs pricing policy for kids and it is to be congratulated. However, I come from a predominantly mag area but I have SAFC supporting friends who are SAFC because they had the opportunity to get into Roker Park. I really hope the rumours are true (as Smug and a couple of other well connected supporters have alluded to) and the owners are seriously looking at expansion. As part of the capital works we can also target the whole regions youth to get them into the expanded SOL. With smart as a dart David Bruce, et al, I’m sure that’s already being thought out.

In relation to this thread, whilst it would be fantastic for our club with this fantastic opportunity we have, it would massively hurt the mags.

The basic plans for the south stand are there to see and it has 2000 fewer seats than the 2001 plans as they are making more room for corporate facilities so i think the max capacity will be around 61-63000.

However we need make the east stand the best stand in the ground with first class corporate facilities and a huge concourse for the masses..That would cost a little more and probably require extending into the car park but it would pay for itself ...The SOL needs to become the shining jewel of the regeneration of the north of the river and have first class facilities used most days of the week, its no more than the fans and the people of Sunderland deserve.

Thanks mate - interesting! With the magnificent regeneration of Sunderland taking place (WDSC) it will be great for the city for the club to be right in the centre of the developing works.

Extending the SOL to 63,000 will support the other regeneration taking place. Hopefully some positive news on the studio works too.

Agree. A fantastic bloke who never forgot his roots and those less fortunate. An example to us all.

Squeaker from Moorside. I remember when the stones were hitting the Directors box windows at Roker Park and his missus was telling him she'd had enough.....he loved us and stuck with us....creating the most wonderful legacy. Given how the world is now,Sir Bob Murray is the most important figure in our entire history.

They had a look at one of the Milan clubs as well.

They are definitely after a super club. There’s no way they get Barca like due to the way it’s owned but they could easily land a major Italian club.

The Premier League insisted PIF had provided them with 'legally binding assurances' prior to the takeover.

Newcastle thought that was the answer to their prayers but it could now make things worse.

The situation with the stadium seems to be way more complicated than expected and NUFC hasn't shown much improvement in the last few years. They're not attracting the interest or revenues they know would push the club into the elite group they need to be in.

In truth the cup win distracted the supporters, for a while, but apart from that they're a long way from being a top European club despite all that spending ...

... they must be looking at the likes of Villa and wondering.

Yes, and at a fraction of the cost per seat!

Been doing the round for a week or two mate. Barcelona maybe difficult due to its legal ownership but the fact is it looks like they are looking.
Saudi taking over Barcelona is impossible under both their own structure, which is fully supporter owned, and possibly against Spanish law.

That said, the debts they have are so huge - something over £3bn and rising - that only a Select European Super League can even begin to sort things out. That is not going to happen.

They can't afford to sort out the Nou Camp properly, though they are back there now. The Spotify Nou Camp I think it might be called.

Anything could happen, and they need a lot of cash from somewhere . They have sold a third of the next twenty five years worth of TV cash and spent every penny. They are a basket case.

But if the Saudis were genuinely looking at them and got nowhere, they'll look somewhere else.

Spot on.

At about the lowest point in his time, I wrote him a letter. It wasn't hostile, there is no point in such a letter. But I groused as we all did and mentioned a lot of things which are easy to imagine for those old enough to remember.

He replied. Not with a standard, " Thank you for your letter...we appreciate your support...blah..blah..

But with a thoughtful, considered letter in which he addressed every point I had made. We were still at Roker Park, which was clearly old and past it's best and no new ground in sight.

He read my horoscope!! Politely and carefully. Everything he wrote in that letter happened, from the new ground to new training complex.

He just didn't have to do that. But he took the time and care to do it, and for that for all he did for us he is a true SAFC hero.

A humble man who humbled me.

I think looking back now, history will show Sir Bob to be absolutely right and those who doubted him and wanted him out wrong.

We all knew that we needed to leave Roker Park and it was gut wrenching when we did but Sir Bob ignored the grief he got and gave us a great stadium that can be expanded upon with no real drama, not to mention a state of the art training ground. Some clubs not too far away will be looking on with envy

I was told years ago that there were multiple possible designs to extend the SOL drawn up under SBM that can be done, up to about 72k, just tweaks to designs. I know I put it on here in the past. I'm hoping we get some news soon, but who knows, the East stand could end up the biggest of them all. <cheers>

That's one of the best posts I've ever read on here!
