To be fair, surely £5m has to be considered around peak for a keeper that can't use his feet. No clue how/if we could bring in a good replacement though
I agree there's a limit to the value due to his kicking ability. But I also think his handling is pretty special, so wouldn't be surprised at all to see him valued at more than 5m in the future ,and he can still improve. Regardless, its a good price at this stage and imagine it would be accepted if there's a chance we can bring in an acceptable alternative, I guess it would need to be a loan.
Personally not sure. I mean Alex Palmer is a little older granted, but he's English (we know that costs a premium) and is a very good and proven Championship keeper and he only cost Ipswich £2m rising to £5m £5M for a keeper at our level is a lot of money, and it would be hard to say no to even with our fee restriction.
Pandur isn’t likely to leave when we can’t sign a replacement of equal quality for free or on loan. He’s been offered a new contract which is more than he’s on now and gives him three more years. He will be a PL keeper and I can see him getting caps for Croatia in the future (his competition is tough with Livakovic as first choice, but there’s an argument to be had that he’s better than Kotarski and potentially Ivusic - over to you @Kalman II…) so it makes sense to get him tied down now. I know he’s probably going to end up at Southampton, but I’m a bit miffed that Oxlade-Chamberlain is now available on a free and we went with Akintola. Not knocking our player but I’d have preferred Ox if the wages would have been payable.
No chance he's pl quality. He's a solid dependable championship keeper but 5m would be crazy money for him.
IF someone bid 5m for him - and I don't think they have - it would also be crazy of us to sell him at this moment in time for the reasons ST states. We need a keeper the defenders know and trust - and Pandur is the only one that fits the bill at the moment.
All this talk of Hughes and Pandur having a price that will be too good to turn down is madness, even if someone offers £20m for Hughes, when we cant replace him what is the point? if it was next summer then I get it, we can go out and buy his replacement, but not right now... we should be shutting up shop.
Or we should be bringing in money to ensure we can meet commitments and not trigger a third window ban..
I meant out of the keepers we currently have. With the EFL restrictions it would be too risky to let Pandur leave without the guarantee of a quality replacement being allowed to join us. Even if Pandur was sold today, would the EFL ratify another keeper before the deadline? With the speed they are moving at I'm not sure. Also, didn't wages prevent us signing Darlow previously?
He's not PL quality now you're right, but he definitely has the potential to be, I personally don't think he'll play there though as I think he suits European leagues better, but he'll definitely play in top European leagues imo £5m is a decent amount for a champ GK and in our circumstances a fantastic amount, but I'd still turn it down ATM and get him tied to a longer deal
If we weren't under a transfer embargo, I think 5m plus for Pandur would be a good deal, we could potential replace him for less and bank the profit, but with the embargo it'd be utterly mental to even consider it
