Kamal might be ****e but whoever thought he was worth setting a new transfer record to buy him, is even ****ier!
Our record with transfer records is appalling, I can’t ever recall a decent one, but there must be in the distant past somewhere

Can anyone recall one?

Actually it may be Sadio, don’t know if he was a record at the time

I think it depends on whether you base it solely on the agreed fee, or if you include any subsequent add-ons and sell-on fees etc.

For example, a number of sources quote Tino as our current record signing - but I believe that's because they include the sell-on which we paid to Chelsea (out of the fee we received from Newcastle). Technically that is a part of the transfer agreement we reached with Chelsea (albeit the amount was unknown at the time), but I doubt any Saints fan considers Tino to be our record signing.

At the time we purchased Mane, I think the fee was less than what we paid for Gaston (but I might be mis-remembering). But if you include all monies paid to Salzburg, then the only purchases which beat it have all been made since we signed him.

So back to the when did we ever make a successful record signing question

Anyone?

EDIT: Rory Delap was our record for quite a while

If based on initial fee alone, then I would suggest Ings. I think he counts because, from memory, the initial fee for him was slightly more than for Carrillo (something like £20m vs £19m).

Danny Ings for £20m was our record signing for a bit. That one worked out well
I struggle to be positive about Ings, he was supposedly back in his spiritual home and he dumped us
I felt particularly let down because he was from my village

Anyone that wasn’t tainted in some way?
