Just working your way up; maybe lower league club, some relative success, getting a higher league & bigger club, etc.
I'd be shocked if it was Gerrard. That would be a god awful appointment.

I agree in principle with you but I saw someone talking about this a while ago and his argument is what does a top player know about playing at say League 2 level? Everything about the club/players/fans/media is completely alien to someone who spent their entire career in the top flight.
If anything trying to coach players at that level would be way harder for an ex top player as they wouldn’t understand why the players can’t do what he’s asking of them because they aren’t talented enough
He has had one good season at Rangers. We would be hiring him because of what he achieved as a player.

Yeah I suppose Arteta; not sure of history with Pep & Alonso but where was Kompany before Burnley? & that was a failure. Maybe I should have added earlier & been sucessful

Kompany is debatable I suppose. Obviously got Burnley promoted and had a disastrous season in the PL, but still got the Bayern job where I believe he’s doing well. Think he was at Anderlecht before but not completely sure off the top of my head.
You can look at it the other way as well,
are there many managers who are regularly successful in the lower leagues but never given opportunities higher up because of style of play/management? These guys might be more suited to lower league management and not have a clue how to manage top level players
That was more than just a 'good' season at Rangers. They went the entire season (38 games) unbeaten. That's only been achieved one other time in the last 100 years up in Scotland. They won 32 and drew just 6. Second highest ever points total.
His first season at Villa was actually not all that bad (W10 D5 L12). 35pts from 27 games. Took them over in lower mid-table, and they ended up lower mid-table. Basically what Potter did at Brighton for three years and yet he is treated like the English Pep for some reason.
Also I think the ex-player thing can work against the likes of Gerrard and Lampard, because there's added pressure to win over a fan base that probably disliked them as players/personalities.
Jack Charlton won the old second division in the first season of his first job with Boro and of course we will be second tier and we wouldn't be Gerrard's first job.

I had the privilege one night to go a football function with Jack being the guest speaker.
I sat next to him at dinner, and was part of the private party who went back to his cousins pub( who I played darts for) for late drinks.
He was warm, funny and engaging.
