I thought we did reasonably well considering he was injured for basically half the season. It does confirm my belief that in the next few years he'll have an absolute stellar rise in English football though. He really seems the natural Kane successor in the England set up.
He was always looked like he'd explode at some point in his senior career and replicate his youth form. His finishing wasn't quite there with us, but we did really well for him and gave him a platform.
I think he played on the right maybe half a dozen times tops. Birmingham, Leicester the two that come to mind, but it was really only a handful of appearances.
I don’t think we gave him enough chances to get goals consistently, McKenna was always going to make him explode. He’ll be in the next England squad I imagine pushing for WC26
It might've been more than that, but the point is it was what we could do with the squad we had. We had a lack of wingers at the start of last season. Once that was addressed in January it no longer had to happen. And he was brilliant in both positions anyway.
It can't have been much more than that, in his last fifty appearances for all clubs, he's played once on the left, ten times on the right and 39 times centrally.
I think it's completely fair to say that we didn't create enough chances last year. But I think we've all said that
I would say it's fairer to say we spread the chances we created around. Considering we had 5 players on 8+ goals is reasonably impressive. For all people keep going on about us not scoring/creating enough last season we actually scored plenty, it was dropping points in 1-1 draws or 2-1 losses when we should have closed the game out (and regularly did under Bruce) that cost us the play offs. Yes of course there was a handful of games where we didn't have a shot on target that wasn't good enough but I'd wager every club in the division over the course of the season would have 2-3 games of that sort. Just this season alone Leeds had a 0-0 with WBA where they only had 1 shot on target for example. I'm sure their fans would say they didn't create enough in that game but none of them would say over the course of the season so far they haven't done enough. I think maybe part of the issue for people isn't so much the number of goals scored but the way we scored them which I guess comes down to outcome v process. Once upon a time people would say they didn't care how we won so long as we won but now it seems that the style matters too. And of course this is amplified in games we don't manage to win (which comes back to my point about cheap goals conceded being the bigger issue last season).
I wonder if we’ll try for Morton in January, the smart money is on a midfielder coming in… Oh and a striker.. hopefully
Im not sure Morton is the answer to our problems in midfield? Especially the way we play at the moment basically by passing it. As good as he was - he rarely took a game by the scruff of the neck and started dictating it. Plus he’d be a bit pricy I imagine.
Agreed of all the quality we had last season, he was probably the one we miss the least. Very average without Seri
We need a proper striker, a midfielder to replace Zambrano and another winger. But I really hope we don't go mad because of the league position.
I typed that, but then I remembered that he's happy with Giles and Drameh playing there so I deleted it. Dunno what he makes of Matty Jacob, he's gonna need loaned out if he isn't going to play.
