Worth saying that it was immediate competition, rather than impact. I think it's probably fair for us to say that the hope was that immediate would mean immediate. But what value would there be in them adding a caveat to the end of that statement that said 'but he does have a slight injury that may mean he misses some time'? And I'd strongly guard against the usual hyper analysis of what KS says in the search for some sort of gotcha. It was a statement that was released at 1 in the morning at the end of a no doubt hectic day. Sometimes **** just happens.
I was hoping for an immediate whatever he said and not a footballing immediate impact.

And I'm not after any gotcha as I'm massively supportive of what we're doing but that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything

tbf to the lad he signed and had a bit of groin pain, he even trained and RLB said he looked good, clearly they've just took a proper look at why the groin pain is occurring and realised it's going to need surgery at some point to fix and they've decided to do it now rather than later

I think it was probably a poor choice of words. I agree with @Scout73 and personally read it as meaning he would go into the first team squad rather than the U21s, rather than meaning he's at 100% fitness and will play immediately.

No I know. I'm just saying that the statement made in his initial announcement wasn't any sort of misdirection. Because there is an alternate universe where we never even hear about this groin issue as it is checked by a specialist and is found to be nowt at all. With the gotcha thing, there's be a whole host of people who will be using this as a stick to beat Speakman with well into 2025. Which to me is psychotic

Anyway I've just read what RLB said and it looks pretty certain that we didn't KNOW he'd be out for 10-12 weeks when he signed. They knew he had a groin problem and has since been assessed and have since spoken to an expert (probably a surgeon) who says surgery is the best way of clearing it up long term - hence being out 10-12 weeks

Its entirely plausible Speakman didn't expect him to be out this long when he said "immediate".

It's fine anyway as immediate doesn't mean immediate anyway

(Joking btw :emoticon-0102-bigsm)

This is my understanding. They knew he had a slight issue but thought he'd be fine enough to have an immediate impact (as in, actual immediate :emoticon-0102-bigsm) hence what KS said.

Once they got him in for a proper evaluation it turned out surgery was recommended to get it sorted now and hopefully avoid future problems.

No lies, no poor planning, just "**** happens"...

You’re right there **** does happen but in my experience a couple of hard boiled eggs slows the process

Would rather get it done now while mayenda is firing and isador is fit. If we wait we could have two of them out

I understand why we sign young players but KS told us he was ready to make an immediate impact which clearly isn't the case. We're still short up front imo.
Maybe JUST MAYBE they didn't know how bad the injury was and had it been just a niggle he would have been available for this fabled "immediate" impact.

REGIS LE BRIS is excited by Milan Aleksic – and expects the Serbian youngster to feature in an attacking-midfield role for Sunderland this season. “Milan is very young and talented, but he’s still discovering Sunderland and the league,” said Le Bris, whose side return to action at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

“But he has a lot of good qualities as a midfielder, an offensive midfielder I think. “He can be creative, with the ability to link with short passes, and I think the ability to shoot and score from outside the box. He's a really interesting player.”

Both Aleksic and fellow deadline-day signing, Chris Mepham, have returned from international duty without any problems and are available for selection against Plymouth.

I think we'll go back in for Bamba in January if the circumstances are right to do so. As a Championship club who have spoken at length about sustainability we aren't going to just bid that amount (reportedly over €10m) on a whim. I think we like him as a player and he will be a long term target.

I know with the very young talents they like them to train at the AOL full time and then send them to local sides to play only, they did this with Chibueze (Consett) and Matty Young (Darlo) last season, as the players move up the pyramid, the teams understandably want to have them in training full time, Matty Young (Salford) will be based out of Manchester this season I'm sure.

League/Conf: (ideal for players beyond u21 level)
Carlisle
Gateshead
Harrogate
Hartlepool
York

Others: (additional experience for players between 18-21 level)
Berwick
Blyth
Consett
Darlo
South Shields
Spennymoor

I think Harrogate would be a good shout for Tommy Watson to get some men's football experience later in the season.

Ellis Taylor just scored a cracking header for Harrogate tonight, good call for Watson look half decent attacking side

You can do Sunderland to Harrogate in about an hour and 15 if the A1 traffic is forgiving, that's nowt that, great club for our young lads.

No idea why we don't try and put formal agreements in place with the likes of Hartlepool and Harrogate etc especially since youth development is such a big part of our strategy now.

Didn't we have some sort of arrangement with York some years ago?
