No, they’re not “harming education”, that’s obviously not what I said at all. Many universities provide fantastic education. (Some courses are ridiculous and are merely just cash cows but that’s a diff topic).
But one of the big cons is that they promote groupthink massively. The prevailing narratives get pushed and amplified
Ironically very similar to an internet forum echo chamber that you joked about.
Even if there is a scientist out there that conclusively proved humans aren’t causing climate change, their voice would be ignored with the way things are now.
This is a lie. Or really stupid. Your self-delusion goes so deep that you have to ignore a vast logic chain to get to your position.
You believe universities promote groupthink.
Ergo you believe universities discourage independent thought.
Even if unis did not have ‘promote discussion of opposing points of view’ for their accreditation, we must then also assume that all these bright people coming together in academic spaces are all ‘sheeple’ - and not inclined to challenge the status quo.
Yet through modern history the uni is the home of divergent thought. It is the breeding ground for radical ideas. In fact, not so long ago climate change was a radical idea- one challenged and fought over in universities.
Therefore, to be correct your idea must require universities to have changed for the worse over the last 30 years.
Or perhaps you believe that universities are breeding grounds of liberal views? Does that mean the more we know about the world, the more left wing we become or are we simply being brainwashed by your liberal elite?
To be true, all your right-wing thought leaders must have avoided university education?
Name three books you have read which oppose your world view. Then ask any student to name three books they have had to read which they disagree with. I am guessing the students have a much more nuanced range of views to draw from.
