Saints fans here - I see both Saints and Hull are keen on Liam Delap. We have been linked to him for a few years now and believe we actually had a bid rejected by man city before he got loaned to stoke.

What do you guys make of him after his loan spell? I assume the fact you want to re-sign him suggests he had a good season for you.
Who? Glass legs? He's rubbish...wink

Thanks for the replies. Purely looking at his goal scoring record I was slightly dubious but I can now see why we would be interested based on what you guys have said, especially if he due to replace Che Adams.

I think he’d be better served coming to us because he needs to refine his game.

Some said Greaves could have gone to the PL last season, but were that the case, he’d have been stuck on the bench and as a result he had a cracking season for us. Same with Delap, at 20 he needs to be playing and developing in a first team and he’ll be first choice with us.

If you did sign him, I think loaning him to a Championship club is best for all parties. I can’t see him being ready to be a first choice PL striker yet, not if Southampton are serious about staying up.

We couldn't afford to spend £10m on a player and then loan him out. If we did buy him it would be to play regularly.

Although I do think it might be a big step for him and another season in the championship is probably what he needs.

Could you guys afford the runoured £10m fee? I doubt city would choose to loan again if there was money on the table for a permanent deal.

Almost certainly not, and that's why we don't really expect to get him.

If we sold Greaves and/or Philogene, yes we could. If we sold one it would leave us only a modest amount for other signings, whereas both would leave us comfortable but reliant on new signings bringing the quality.

FWIW I don’t think he’ll go for £10m, that’s their starting position and I think it can be negotiated down somewhat.

I think as per usual with City players and valuations, we are unlikely to get anywhere near the £20M slapped on each of Greaves and Philogenes heads.

Probably more likely to be a combined £22-23M for the pair.
Even so, I'd still lay out £10M of that to get DeLap.

I’ve been saying the same for weeks…£15mill each & they are gone

Philogene's Villa release is 15m. The suggestion has always been he will only go for far more than that, so really not sure why people think he's going for 15m. There's really no point selling him for 15m, may as well just keep him for another year.

Even selling greaves and philogene
10m is way too.much for a club with our income in the championship
We need like 10 players

As much as I'd love for us to sign him, you are unfortunately quite right. 10 players minimum, likely a few more than that in reality (when Greaves & Philogene inevitably go, plus I still think a couple more 1st team unexpected's too).

And ... "Same with Delap, at 20 he needs to be playing and developing in a first team". He's actually 21 - will be 22 during the coming season (Feb).

10m would be ridiculous for us to spend on him

I suppose it would depend on how the deal was structured. If it was say, 5+3 in instalments and another 2 upon promotion, 10m is manageable for a player that could be a 20m player by the time he’s polished up.

Isn’t it £15m opening bid in Villas favour or something?
