Agreed, massively. I wouldn’t be impressed with Challinor at all, despite his record elsewhere.

I’m keeping an eye on sky bet, no movement today but Still remains 11/4 favourite

If it was a choice of Challinor or Robinson I’d go for Challinor every day of the week.

    Luckily it isn’t.

Same, tbh I’d probably go for murty over them haha. Don’t think the club will take that kind of risk personally for this appointment. Either a coach from abroad or someone with some championship experience.

If we'd appointed Rohl when Sheff Wed did people wouldve been outraged but now he's worth the massive compensation apparently. Same with Cifuentes. The key is to identify these coaches before they become expensive. Instead of mocking these potential coaches we should be looking at the possibilities.

You think people would have been outraged with rohl? Very similar background to Maric who feels like would be received quite positively?

That's true and I hope the club have the courage to do that, especially after Beale.

Having said that it remains to be seen how good Rohl and Cifuentes will be now the madness has died down.

The wider fanbases reaction to Maric wasn't exactly good. Maybe outraged is the wrong word but would people have been happy with us spending the reported £5million on Rohl before his 6 months at Sheff Wed? Nope. So why now? It's not even like the job he did at Sheff Wed is relevant to our job.

Fair enough I was taking the Maric reception from here mainly. I think the difference with rohl now from 6 months ago is the incredible job he did in the league we are in (not saying I think we should pay record compo for him mind!).

Do agree with you getting these types before they become expensive, just don’t think we should look at people in englands 4th tier. I’d rather we tried something different and looked abroad for someone with different ideas for the squad

I've said this numerous times, but Barcelona's stated head coach recruitment policy is (until recently at least) based on suitability to the club and its ethos, rather than previous achievements or having had roles at large clubs.

I've also pointed out dozens of times that a relegation on a coach's CV doesn't make them a failure. They have to be judged on things like the players and resources available to them. When I say this it's often treated with derision but it's a logical fact, and accepted by most managers/coaches I know, that without good players, a coach cannot succeed. Its strange that people think like this because in countries like Italy, the same attitude doesn't prevail.

You can't judge the ability, or suitability of a coach to step up, without looking at context. Judging them on the clubs they've managed, or win percentages, or league positions in isolation won't give a true picture.

That said, I don't think SAFC can currently afford the PR issues that will inevitably come with appointing someone like Challinor.

I think that would be easier to swallow if it felt like Sunderland had headed in that direction but it feels like managers come and go and take with them their style and our squad is more made up of generalists to the point where many aren't yet settled into a position/role.

If there is a vision behind our playing philosophy, I haven't yet seen it.

So many interesting coaches here and across the world. Been looking at Eirik Horneland at Brann over the last few days and I think that would be a great appointment.

Yep. The DoF model is supposed to give the club a playing identity which means you can plug in different coaches who may have slight differences but overall have the same principles. How we went from Mowbray to Beale I will never know.

I was really impressed until I seen the teams and what level they’re at.

Needs to have a high win percentage at league one level before I think there’s something impressive about him personally.

It's a shame Speakman gets so much unwarranted criticism because it probably hinders a proper conversation about his performance in the role.

There's certainly failures with the successes.

Yeah I was trying to say this the other day. People criticise him so much for things that aren't even that bad or in some cases are actually positive things, yet ignore glaring errors.

Maybe this is my delusion but when I sit and think about it. Lens makes no sense for Still. They are in 100m worth of debt, protests going on by fans with banners outside their facilities. The league is having an issue with TV rights. It honestly sounds WORSE than the situation he had at Reims which is why he left.

also he was quite adamant over the past year or so he wanted to come to England and manage. Surely he’s just using Lens as a leverage for a better deal here. Hopefully Magnus is right and he’s getting it and it’s sorted soon.

but to me, him going to Lens doesn’t make sense
