Cashin is very old school, plays a very direct style at Derby, Hughes plays possession football. Either way one of those 3 I’d be happy

Should Leeds get promoted, maybe Cooper would become available for a return home. Might do a reasonable job for a season or two.

I’m not opposed to signing some more experience in defence in the summer, but not as a direct replacement for Greaves. We should be replacing Greaves with someone of a similar age or younger that is already quite good but has potential to develop further. Someone who we could invest in and potentially sell for a profit later down the line.

Also, whilst experience is good, it isn’t the be and end all if they’re not that good, don’t have the legs to consistently play twice a week if available and demand high wages without any resale value. It’s just money down the drain like with Sharp. Greaves played 46 games in the Championship in the 21/22 season, 44 in the 22/23 season and has played 39 games this season. It’s remarkable that he’s never been injured since he cemented a place in the starting lineup in the 20/21 season. He’s only ever missed games for us since he came into the side due to picking up too many yellow cards and being suspended. Cooper would not be an ideal replacement for Greaves for this reason. Cashin on the other hand as played 43 and 42 games in back-to-back seasons.

If we sold Greaves and signed Cashin + someone like Calum Chambers on loan from Villa or for a nominal fee, that would be good business.

Jones Coyle are experienced players at the back now. We don’t just play out for the sake of it anymore those 2 + Greaves will happily leather it if needs be

Perhaps it goes without saying, but any centre back will need to be extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet in tight situations, to fit the way we play. Is League One the best place to find such players?

There’s a few who fit that style of play, yes. Cashin can do it but Derby are more direct under Warne than under Rosenior. Edwards can do it comfortably and Hughes is good at it too.

There’s a few teams in League One who play similar possession football to clubs in the Championship. Portsmouth, Peterborough, Bolton and Wigan all play possession football in League One and play out from the back.

I don't know much about these players but you hear Cashin's name talked about as one of the top prospects in League 1, wouldn't that mean he'll go for several million, and are we realistically going to be spending that on a single player, a defender at that?

It'll be interesting to see what our spending strategy looks like this summer because we're likely to have a decent amount to spend but a lot of players to sign.

And incidentally, I still think the assumption that we're interested in Callum Chambers is putting to much stock in what happened in January. From what Tan said, we were offered him and said no. I've not seen any serious suggestion that he's a player there was ever actually any interest in from our side.

Good point in fairness, but premier league youngsters in turn struggle more with the other side of the game which I feel we put on our centre backs a lot (physicality) the number of times when we press high Greaves and Jones have to engage in duels high up is probably as important as their ball playing

Yes, Cashin will probably cost a few million. It would be an investment in a good centre-half with a high ceiling. If we sell Greaves for £20 million or more, which is likely, then spending a quarter of that on his like-for-like replacement is normal and is exactly what the likes of Brighton and Brentford do. Brentford did it especially in the Championship. They sold Watkins for £28 million that could rise to £33 million with add-ons and bought Toney for £5 million that could rise to £10 million with add-ons.

We should definitely emulate this policy if/when we sell Greaves and/or Philogene. Selling Greaves and Philogene and replacing them with 30-year-old journeymen on free transfers with no resale value would be a **** transfer policy in the long-term.

I don't think we're in the L1 market anymore, unless the baller has bags of potential and pedigree....More like those bubbling under in the European market and prem league larkers who don't get regular games...

Hull City are set to add more Turkish players to their squad, according to Tan Kesler.

The Tigers’ vice-chairman was this week interviewed by Asist Analiz, and talked a lot about his plans for their squad in the coming years.

Hull City currently have Abdülkadir Ömür and Ozan Tufan in their team, besides Doğukan Sinik, who’s current out on loan, and the idea is to have more Turkish guys there.

“A part of our squad is such talented players. But we want to give an opportunity to the children of our own country here too. Even though our game philosophy is Uyan, we focus a lot on player’s profiled from Turkey that will serve our success and take us one step further.

“As you know, Doğukan is here, Ozan is with us, Abdülkadir, one of the leaders of the team for a long time has just joined but adapted very well. We went through both Turkish and foreign players who played in the Turkish Super Lig. Turkey is with us, Turkey is our audience. We are always watching Turkey and following it.”

Kesler also talked about other objectives Hull City have, with the first obviously being to clinch a place in the Premier League.

“It’s a very good question. Let’s do it with players but it is very important to mix it correctly. Because getting out of this league is one goal, getting to the Premier League is another goal. Being permanent in the Premier League and going to bigger arenas from there is also a goal.”

Hull City currently stand 7th in the Championship, as they come from a tough sequence of results, and will need a good sprint to secure a place in the play-offs for promotion.

The club would undoubtedly have a lot more resources to bring in those Turkish players should they get to the Premier League, so that’s surely vital for the management before they start analysing those signings. The final weeks of the season should then be decisive for that.

When Brentford sold Maupay and Konsa for a combined £25m, they spent £20m of it bringing in Mbeumo, Jansson, Jensen, Norgaard, Raya and Pinnnock. That's got to go down as the greatest transfer window in championship history. Brentford got promoted by consistently selling and signing well, something we need to emulate.

I suppose it just has to be a player you're very confident in. Sinking several million on a player in the hope they'll make you more in the future seems like a big bet. But as you say, other clubs of the model we're trying to be do do it. Hopefully our recruitment proves as good as theirs.

If we got promoted this year I think Acun would use his links to Fenerbahçe and work his magic to try and get us İsmail Yüksek. He’s been linked to big clubs in Europe but with Acun and his 50% sell-on clauses with Turkish teams, who knows? Ömür is not a £2 million player. But Acun managed to get him for that + another £2 million if we get promoted and a 50% sell-on clause. Ömür could’ve easily gone to another club in January for £7-8 million. I still can’t believe we managed to get him.

The Turkish player thing just sounds like more telling the Turkish audience what they want to hear, as Tan and Acun do a lot. I don't think there are realistically all that many Turkish players we'll be interested in.
