I think he's confirmed himself that the real reason he left was Alex Neil.
It would be an amazing story for him to come back and be a huge success.
Only problem is what do we have to go on, nothing, he could be great or he could be even worse than Dodds.
Dodds has a reputation for being a fantastic coach yet is really poor in the hot seat.
We don't even know if Defoe could put the cones out in the right formation.
Would be a fairy tale story but one hell of a gamble that's not worth the risk

Not sure what it is about Defoe's personality but I just do not see him as a manager/coach.

Bit like Dwight Yorke, bit to laid back. Roy Keane was totally different, he had the authority about him that even if the tactics weren't right the players would give everything for 90+ minutes.
How many games did we win after 85 minutes, it was unbelievable, that to me showed it wasn't the tactics that were spot on it was the desire.
Thing is even that can only take you so far as we found out pplaying uality teams in the PL

Defoe is a complete unknown quantity as a manager. We don't need that, and he certainly doesn't need us as his first job.

It's not a risk we can take at this point.

I think the fact Defoe has publicly said he wants the job, means he's definitely not getting it <laugh>

More chance of Fernando Torres getting it than Defoe

If he’d been the appointment after Mowbray it may have been do-able as there was still opportunity to take a risk. Now though, whoever comes in next season needs to hit the ground running to mend some of the frustrations of this season. Every appointment is a gamble but Defoe would be too big a gamble to follow his two predecessors ( imho of course)

Now I know it shouldn't mean anything but I just think Jermaine's too short to be a manager...

Having said that Charles Manson was only 5,2 and was supposedly a very charismatic leader <laugh>

He also used a whole lot of rape and the threat of it as a motivational tool.

Can't see the squad reacting well to that.

A coach who has been touted with taking the vacant position is IF Elfsborg boss Jimmy Thelin who has been with the Swedish outfit for six years now and boasts an overall win ratio of 42.5% at the club. It was reported in Sweden that the 46-year-old had held talks with Sunderland over potentially becoming head coach before Michael Beale took the reins.

Elfsborg director of football Stefan Andreasson has confirmed in an interview with Goteborgs-Posten that there is interest in Thelin’s services and the club will look to find a solution when the right option becomes available to him [quotes via Sport Witness]:

“There is interest and alternatives for him, but we have concluded in our dialogues that he should continue with Elfsborg. Then we will see what the future shows, we are proud that he is a sought-after name.

“In the best of worlds, it’s like with players, that you buy out the coach. But when the right option is available for Jimmy, we will find a solution.”

    Writer’s View

It would be a big risk for Sunderland to go down this route given Thelin’s non-existent experience coaching in English football. However, the same was said when Marti Cifuentes took over at Queens Park Rangers back in October, yet look at him now.

Nevertheless, Heckingbottom would also be a decent option as he is someone with plenty of experience in the Championship and helped Sheffield United reach the promised land once more last term. Perhaps he could do the same with the Black Cats.
