Good to see people are already taking this the wrong way. He is talking about his COACHING as assistant at Rangers and Villa and as Head Coach of QPR not his management skills when he was manager at Rangers, as he is not the manager here. We really have some thick fans. You must log in or register to see media
Smug's tale is definitely the more widely understaood origin story there mate.

Peter Reid was hardly well spoken and dropped more letters than Lee Camp dropped crosses ...
... but I don't remember a single complaint, then or now.
Sorry Smug. You are wrong. Mackem and Tackem is a phrase coined to boast of the towns shipbuilding and repairing industry. It differentiated between Sunderland and the towns that either just built or just repaired ships. A sort of “so there! Yaya ye yaya” sort of thing. If delivered by a child it would be followed by a tongue sticking out.

As I understand it, "we [the shipyard workers] mak 'em and ye [the harbour pilots/tugboat captains who move the ships after completion] tak 'em". The piss-taking element of the nickname being based on the pronunciation of the words "make" and "take"."We Mackem and they Tackem"
Slang for "We Make them and they take them".
