Good player. We overpaid both in fee and wages but neither is his fault. Failed to build a team around him that was of the required standard, and never really worked out how to use him properly. I think a lot of ours fans misunderstood what we bought, he's never been a grafter who'll chase lost causes. Inevitably became the scapegoat when we went down due to his monster wages. Match made in hell but I don't blame him and wish him well. When he was alongside Shearer he looked dangerous. When alongside Martins and the other dross mercenaries, he looked more and more toothless.

 

If he was less injury prone then he would be a huge hit in the team we have at the moment. Two wingers throwing balls in the box from all angles (fair enough usually not at the angle they aim for) and Cabaye feeding him through the defence.

 

In his peak he was a fantastic footballer. Unfortunatley his peak was at 22. While he was at us he started well but drastically lost interest after brteaking his foot. His attitude in the relegation season was unforgiveable

 

Luque, Boumsong, Smith. All are far, far worse than Owen. Yes, they cost less, but they also did far less for the club during their time here.

Owen was a good player who we overpaid for. Due to other circumstances he never really lived up to his potential during his time at Newcastle.
For whatever reasons, the fans never really took to him, even when he was playing well. He was criticised for other clubs showing interest in him, despite the fact he never showed interest in leaving during the duration of his contract. He was also criticised for not staying with the club when we were relegated, even though his contract had expired and for most of the previous 4 years people had been calling him a greedy ****.

The fans and bad luck with injuries are the reason for Owen's "failure" at Newcastle. Nothing else.

 

He's a twat. Newcastle spent a lot of money to have him sitting on the treatment table, only for him to miraculously make a recovery whenever there was an England game around the corner.

 

My view is that he was a great player. Injuries took their toll, but goals to games ratio is excellent. When playing for us, he simply wasn't on the pitch enough but you could still tell he was a truely quality player.

Sorry but I completely disagree with those points. All the Newcastle fans I talked to were behind Owen and accepted the fact that he was always got injured until he got back to full fitness. Certainly I didn't know of anyone who was calling him a greedy bastard when he was injured.

It all changed for me during the relegation season, when he was disgracefully unprofessional and his body language and performances on the pitch told you everything. This was from a man who was supposed to be our captain and an experienced senior player for the squad to look up to. He was so **** that he ended up getting dropped, it's all well and good blaming the players around him who were admittedly crap too, but he just looked like he couldn't be arsed I thought.

This is not to mention his comments since leaving Newcastle, saying that he'd rather be on the bench every week at a big club than playing every week for a 'small' club (obviously referring to us considering the rest of the places he's been). After we nursed him back to health repeatedly for 3 years and paid him £110k per week for the privilege, he should be showing us a lot more respect than that. He's more interested in his stables and racehorses than football I reckon - seem to remember footage of him crying tears of joy after one of his horses won some cup, haven't seen him that impassioned for quite a while.

Michael Owen was a square peg in a round hole. He wasn't what we needed at a time when we had too many mercenaries who didn't really care for the club or for the shirt. By no means the only one, what he was was the highest profile of the lot (which included, imho, Duff, Viduka, perhaps even Martins ect). We needed 11 devoted, hard working players proud to wear the shirt (as we've had this and last year). He was often forced to play out of position, asked to drop deeper to collect the ball which was a problem for two reasons:

1) he probably didn't want to do this

2) he was useless at it


What we also found out was that he's not the natural, born goal scorer the press would still have you believe. Don't get me wrong, his record is fantastic but he often needed 3 or 4 clear cut chances in order to find the net. 3 or 4 chances (if not more) is something he had in a strong Liverpool team, a very strong Madrid team and an often strong *England team. 3 or 4 chances a game he did not get at Newcastle. He was no longer quick either. Above all though, it was his seeming disinterest in Newcastle United football club, especially considering how much he was being paid, his ability to be fit and ready for England at the whiff of a cap, his decsion to leave at the first opportunity (when the likes of Gutierrez, Coloccini even Enrique decided to hang around) and comments he's made since leaving the club that have really riled us. Then consider we paid 17mil for him and he earnt 110k a week, he bleed millions out of the club and gave back so little and then left at the first opportunity after contributing more than his fair share to our relegation from the Prem.
