Think with Ashby they feel he needs a full season of First Team football this year as he got a few Europa League and cup appearances last year but needs a decent season of 30+ starts which he won't get here this season, Livarmento just coming back from a major injury you can be a bit more careful with and 15-20 starts for him plus sub appearances would be a good first season for him to get him back up and running.

Between the both though we look set at RB for the foreseeable future at 20 and 21 respectively and Trippier will be 33 in 6 weeks time...

It must affect them going forwards though - this crazy 12 month spend if amortized over the 5 years will still knock something like £160-165m off the next 5 seasons spending ability though right? Even taking the £300m incoming off it'll still be ~ £100m a year over the 5 years that is already spent from their budget.

Yeah, that's how I see it. The amortisation of transfers is great for short term splurging but if you bring in a bunch that can't hack the Premier league and flop in year 1, then all of a sudden you end up like Everton not able to get rid of any of the flops yet still having to account for their cost as well as their wages over the next 4 seasons

It's all about risk management at the end of the day. You take a risk hoping that it pays off. The better your scouting, the less risk you have.

    It's true.

Targett on £100k is the more worrying one though.

It's not just about net transfers though. The revenue streams the likes of the 'big 6' get from their commercial deals simply dwarfs anything we have so far.

Just look at £900m for Man United's Adidas sponsorship vs our Castore deal. That gives them way more capacity.

i've no idea how fine a line Chelsea are actually running, but it won't just be the face value of transfer dealings, they will have vatious other revenue streams ro factor into their FFP, that we currently cannot.

One of our biggest issues is the wages / revenue ratio, we are at the upper end of that - and it will becone much stricter from next year. So we need to get that ratio down soon. Way more commercial deals needed to help generate revenue. Or at least some nice juicy ones that generate much more than our current sponsorships.

They can't be doing it well because they were just fined £10m on Saturday for FFP irregularities (granted under Abramovic's reign). :emoticon-0140-rofl:

Your right though no one knows what their behind the scenes contracts are like and what they are bringing in so they could be ok but I'd be surprised if they aren't banking on CL qualification for the next few seasons.

I trust eddie and the owners but sometimes they do make some clangers. 100k a week for Targett is ridiculous, and Wood was a silly signing in my eyes.

I'm pretty sure Targett was excellent and Newcastle stayed up and I don't think they had long to mess about or were they spoilt for choice at the time.

Burnley were finished for 25 million it was excellent business.

Basically Newcastles recruitment has been excellent.

I’m going for Tonali or Gordon. Unless a top class centre back comes in then they might be an option

It has been excellent, mostly, but Wood wasn't an essential, and 25 million for basically Shola Ameobi V2 is not good business.

Targett was good, but 100k a week?

I've been more impressed with our ability to get the best from Longstaff, willock, joelinton, Almiron, Schar etc.

Newcastle were 19th without a striker at the time. They wouldn't have been able to attract a decent one, so they saw they could simply take wood and that defeated Burnley and basically relegated them.

Targett was probably on good money at villa he's not really played much but is a reliable solid player.
