Harte is talking up his player for a new contract. It's literally his job.

Clearly he didn’t do a good job last summer sorting a suitable contract then.

Biggest issue with selling Jacky or Roberts is that you cannot improve on them at this level.

Not without spending what we get or more to do so, and somehow either finding an absolute gem from abroad or having someone drop from PL.

To sell Jacky now for anything less than a massive premium would put a question mark over how ambitious we are to reach the PL soon.

We can’t realistically replace like for like, let alone better.

Harte has done no wrong. Deals last summer were based on newly promoted. Established at the higher level it’s right they’d maybe feel they deserve a bit on top and the club will have factored this in.

What are you on about? Clarke had a breakout season and is worth more this year, than last. We've given new contracts to half of our squad and Clarke is the jewel in the crown. It's absolutely normal practice.

Just disagree with agents trying to back the club into a corner publicly when they themselves negotiated a contract less than a year ago

That's not happening though. It's just negotiation and using the leverage you have to get the best deal.

Would you think badly of the club trying to sell a player a year after they've committed to a 5 year contract?

Would you think badly of Stewart for deciding to run his contract down and leave for free next year?

Yes I would think badly of the club for doing that, because signing that player on a long contract and giving up on them after a year is bad practice. The Stewart situation is completely different, as many have said he probably regrets not signing the contract we offer pre injury, and I would not blame him at all for leaving for free next summer because its just an unfortunate situation all round

Agents literal job is to get best deal for their clients.

If he doesn’t they lose their clients.

You've chosen a strange hill to die on.

Is 2 years ok? Or should every club keep players until the end of their contract without either a sale or renewal?

Best deal for themselves. There's an endless supply of clients.

    Look at Darren Bent.

No clients, no ‘best deal for themselves’

There's a continual onslaught of 'if the club do this it's bad' ...

... but no praise when they don't do that thing.

We've had some real classics from 'if we sell Dan Neil' to 'if we sell Roberts' and many more.

It's as if people want to get a dig in before the club robs them of the chance.

You are completely missing my point. The club should always do what is best for them, not be held to ransom by an agent who only cares about their wallet

Three bids in, first £7 million, last £9 million, so I think we can work out what the second bid was. All of those bids are pathetic. Either they think they'll get him cheap, haven't got the cash or aren't serious. Bloody pathetic in any of those circumstances.

I understand your point, but you're not seeing it objectively. If you want the club to look after their own interests, then you have to accept that an agent will also look after their own interests and that of the player. It's the other side of the same coin.

The part which I find slightly confusing / worrying is that Burnley must be getting encouragement from somewhere. When the first offer of £7m came in we could easily have said "you're nowhere close, we won't even consider selling for less than £20m". Clearly we didn't though, otherwise they wouldn't have come back with these £8m and £9m bids. Feels like the club must be giving them some encouragement? Slightly worrying we'll sell for less than he's worth but that makes no sense given how the club have conducted their business in recent years. I know nowt about the inner workings of football clubs and transfer deals so maybe I'm way off base, anyone more knowledgeable about these things? @Scout73 don't suppose you can shed any light mate?

Agreed mate, we should be telling them to stop calling unless it’s at least double the last offer.

£9m is an absolute piss take.

Exactly this. I have a feeling they aren’t too far away at 9 million.

We should be asking for double that, though.
