Just wondering if anyone knew which ground was the first to be sponsored? Was it Middlesborough's "Cellnet" Riverside, Bolton's "Reebok" or was there an earlier one?

This about sums it up. It's sad and depressing but it's the way football is going.

I like to think of St. James' Park as a fortress, somehow the sports direct arena, or whatever it will become just doesn't have the same ring to it.

If only MA's company was called Sport's trade direct, then it would be the STD arena. I'm afraid to say that this is just the way the sport is going in 10years time i expect nearly all the PL stadiums will be sponsored.

LLambias said we had to move with the times and yes I think a lot of clubs will go down our road.

If they invest the money in the club it's good business but will he,we just cant trust him.

I'm not bothered by the actual sponsoring of the stadium IF it kept the SJP in it.

After all it'll be the same thinking behind it as Citeh for when the new financial rules come in, if you sponsor them in some way who says there is a limit how much that deal is worth so get's around the finanical regulations and stops teams from over spending.

But if it is losing the SJP completly then NO I'll be totaly pissed, SJP is like a monument and is a recognised land mark of the area like the Angel of the North or the Tyne bridge.

To us regs it'll always be SJP. You'll just have to get that Nun in your sig pic to say a prayer for us that it'll be SJP to future generations too.

You can see why they've done it though. If you keep SJP people will still call it SJP, therefore making the sponsorship pointless.

We could keep the stadium name as St.James' Park and ask MrAshley if he'd kindly alter all his stores to be called "SJP trading" outlets?!

Morning AB, well this is a nice thing to wake up to, I feel really put out about it. It could all come back and bite the fat fat man on his fat ****.
It's hugely unpopular amongst fans, might it put off other would be sponsors, on the other hand does Ashley appreciate how unpopular he is an is just breaking the ice, assuming we'll be happier to see him replaced by anyone else.??????????
Do Blue Nuns pray? :emoticon-0105-wink:

My goodness, I don't think I've ever seen so many people so completely apathetic about a subject but so interested in posting about it.

It seems no one is interested in attempting to change this decision, so why not come out and admit we really can't be arsed one way or the other ?

As long as it remains Sports Direct Arena (shudder) there will be no investment in the club.

Hey guys, sorry to hear about the ground name change, love your stadium always filled with passion and looks amazing and bursting with colour, hoping we will visit you next year, really wasn't sure about you taking Pards on after we got rid but he is really doing well! Good luck from a happy Saints fan!!!!

I agree. Even moneybags teams like Citeh and Chelski need the extra income from selling their stadium naming rights.
In 10 years time you will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

It's not that we don't care, it's that we can't do anything about it.

Next to be sold is us, the fans. We won't even get a choice, we'll just be told that we're now fans of, say, Wigan and we'll just have to follow them. Could take a few years but I'm sure we'll get into the swing of it. At least the drive from Newcastle to Wigan is an enjoyable one <whistle>
