It's kind of a disgrace, but honestly, none of us will call it that. Only Sky will. It's a name, he'll prolly have to backtrack on it anyhow.

I thought they said it was temporary?

Temporary until the end of the season when the Northern Rock sponsorship runs out. Then he is looking to do an Arsenal/City and have one shirt/stadium sponsor. I see what he is trying to do in what is a changing market in the football world. Iconic history has succumbed to financial gain, that could be down to greed or the current economic climate. However, there was no need to change the name now until that sponsor is in place for next season. On the otherhand its his club and the money used to buy it and finance it has come from sports direct. I really just think we should all ignore it and concentrate supporting the teams magnificent effort on the pitch.

I feel for the Newcastle fans, this must seem like another piece of club history being ripped away in the search for corporate greed.
Trouble is, if the club are serious about competing at the top level then you have to maximise your income potential, I'm not defending it but it's the harsh reality created by a sport that is dominated by ££££££££££

This about sums it up. It's sad and depressing but it's the way football is going.

They wont sell the naming rights and it will remain Sports Direct Arena. DL just said on the radio if they have to do it seperatly they will (stadium/shirt sponsor). Ashley pays around 50k from SD for all that sponsorship in the ground now. If they want to generate cash why not sell all the Sports Direct sponsorship patches??/

Its all lies, its all about sports direct.

Itll always be St James' Park

not sure if this has been said yet but does the FA not have a rule about changing the name of a venue during the season . THERES ONLY ONE UNITED AND WE PLAY IN ST JAMES PARK . NEWCASTLE NEWCASTLE

Your kn*bhead of an owner may have changed it but I'm sure I speak on behalf of most fans that no one will know it as the Sports Direct Arena.

St James' Park is St James' Park and that's that.

Nearly had a heart attack when I heard the news on the radio this morning. Although this day was going to come sooner or later - not that it makes it any easier.

Not sure if this has already been said or not, but does anyone actually think this is temporary? We've just had new SD signs go up and of course those would have to be removed if a new sponsor came along. It seems like this is going to be a long term thing to me.

So who do you play next at the SDA?

SunDerlAnd

Well that'll be another win against 5under1and then <ok>

What are they renaming it to? "The Mike Ashley's Emporium of Crap Area"?

It'll never stick. Our ground has been SJP for over 100+ years, Fat Mike trying to make a few quid more won't change that. Most of the Corporate named stadiums were new builds when named which is why it was more acceptable, as many have said it'll still be SJP, 100 years of tradition won't wiped out like that.

And to the folks saying our season's going to go down the ****ter now <doh> just <doh>

are you looking for an excuse for us to fail or what? It won't affect anything that goes on on the park, just get a grip & calm the **** down. Kneejerk much?

David Craig said something on Sky Sports that backed up my idea last night, he said that the SD signs would be down by 12 today if a new sponsor comes forward, but why spend all this money on signs to take them down? SD to be our new shirt sponsor in the 12/13 season?

Cardiff City fan here - as far as I'm concerned Newcastle United Football Club play at St James' Park. You can't wipe out over 100 years of tradition for the sake of a few quid - it stinks!

I'd say what's been spent on those tacky signs is loose change compared to the investment a new sponsor would fork out to get the space .. seems they're trying to show how visible the available space is .. guessing no one wants to take that on at the moment because they're having to deal with DL & Co. who no doubt will be driving a deal that's good for one side only ..

Still, if all this brings in the money that's needed these days to compete then, as a few have already said, it's unfortunately the way football is .. out with tradition, in with wads of cash and garish stadium names ..

Commercially its a no brainer. If we get a shirt/stadium sponson that brings in money then I am all for it.

Its still gonna be St James Park and we know it, all football fans know it. Anyways lets remember its not the stadium thats called St James Park in a sense but the pitch itself.

To compete we need money. Advertising generates this.

On the downside its a win win for Cashley as hes getting the rest of the seasons advertising free. The club is getting no income as a result which counters what they are trying to do.

If he gets no sponsor in (which is quite possible) then we will be stuck with Sports direct sponsoring our stadium and kit and no income as a result. Will he pay a commercial rate for the same product. Will he f**k.

Lets hope we do get a sponsor.

So with that it mind, dont the Freeman own the pitch? and therefore that portion CANT be renamed because of it?
