I've applied to the army but with me having an injury in the last 3 months I need to prove that I have fully recovered by writing down all the exercise I do over the next 3 months. I have to do atleast 1 day of hill walking a week for 1.5/2hrs (6-8mile) and go running atleast twice a week (30mins) as well as pull ups, push ups, sit ups and tricep dips.

Before you go you need to be able to run 1.5mile in under 12mins.

So much wrong with this, I don't know were to start. First of if you want to make a claim like that at least put a quote up from the Quran. Al qaeda just use Islam as a way to brainwash new recruits, I can guarantee you that 99.% of Muslims cringe every time Al quaeda are mentioned as they tarnish Islam (just as your bullshit threads tarnish the Toon Army.) Every religion can be taken out of context and manipulate by terrorists, remember a few months ago how that guy in Norway killed all those people all in the name of Christianity? Cast your mind back to the day of the holy wars when Christians would invade Muslim lands all in the name of religion. My point is that no true leader in Any religion would condone the killing off people just because they follow a different faith.

Your posts in this thread have really lowered my opinion of you tash <ok>

Edit - I know its an old thread but I never read it before and needed to have my say :D

You live in Newton Aycliffe? I'm joining the TA REME unit down there. <ok> The running isn't the hard part for me it's the upper body strength which I need to get sorted.

Upper body is hard for me too...I managed 7 full heaves (pull ups) the other day which wasn't too bad, but then again I don't carry much weight.

The TA REME unit I think is opposite the oak leaf sports complex. When are you joining there mate?

Aye that's the place been a couple of times. I've got selection in January which is obviously a while away and gives me a lot of time to sort my fitness out. Recruitment for the TA has gone through the roof apparently so i won't be there for a while yet.

Sorry guys but I have to go massively against the flow on this one. Full respect to Tash if he did go and join the army, I think it's a great thing to do for our country and full credit if he wants to get out of the 9-5 routine and try something decent.
To those who are against joining the army, and have argued the case for Islam etc. I agree with you that the doctrine of Islam is not to kill all others. However if anyone reads the holy book you will see that killing in the name of Allah IS promoted whether you like it or not. Without the army, we would see more and more of these bombings taking place, more and more civilians killed. Sometimes I feel that people try to defend the indefensible. The vast majority of suicide bombings are carried out by self-proclaimed Islamists, it's just a fact.
An almost identical scenario is Crimewatch. People say that black people are in no way "worse-behaved" than white people. But have you noticed how many of the wanted faces on Crimewatch are black? I'm not even remotely racist let me assure you, but it strikes me as odd that in a predominantly white country, there are more wanted black people than white people. I would never judge someone on skin colour, but, as a whole, the black community is one that leans much more towards violent criminality than the white community. And yet, some try to claim that this is untrue. It is a modern attitude of the contemporary "do gooders" to try and defend the indefensible and plain ignore the facts in front of their noses.
I can guess that post will cause some controversy, however I believe I have been fully reasonable.

Ignorance alert <doh> get your head out of the Daily Mail and actually research the history of the western world and its relationships and meddlings in the middle east and you will see where the basis for the current conflicts lie, Hint - its not in the Qu'ran

You do realise you and Daily Mail readers are just as stupidly dogmatic as each other? It's ridiculous. It's hard not to lie at the hypocrisy from both sids. As for Cheik the room's comments they are fair enough and not racist in anyway it's his opinion and he is allowed to hold it. Imo all religions are as bad as each other. They all promote some sort of evil and can be interpreted in twisted ways to suit peoples agendas. To say that the Qu'ran and the way it is interpreted is not in any way responsible for conflicts in the middle east is frankly idiotic.

I've just left the army mate, only served for 6 months but I can deffinetely help you...

Its good to be quite fit when you join but no matter how fit you are they will push you to your limit anyway on an individual level. You will definitely need to improve on what your doing atm though.. before i joined i was running 3.2 mile in just over 22 mins. But they are more bothered abour your 1.5 mile best effort time mate, around 10 mins is a good time for joining. by the time I finished basic training i was doing my1.5 mile in 8m 46s. As well as the cardio, i strongly reccomend you work on your upper body and core strength. This is because the basic fitness tests they give you is somthing called a PFT (Personal Fitness Test). This consists on 2 minutes best effort sit ups, 2 minutes best effort press ups then the 1.5 mile best effort. You will do some of these through the recruitment process and will do 3 during basic training.. its amazing how much this improves by the end !! .. When you first start you will do stuff like 3 mile runs and stuff and will eventually be running 6.5 mile cross country and on shingles.

About going into theatre (leaving for a tour), it completely depends on which regiment your joining and how training goes. I was a vehicle mechanic in there so i wouldnt of been going to Afghan untill sometime in 2013.

The other recruits, from my experience, where amazing. You obviously get the odd one or two you just want to slap about but thats understandable with so many lads together. You get on like you wont get on with anyone else anwhere else, you have to really as there is a good chance you will be fighting along side them and working with them for the rest of your army career.

I was also thinking about it for a few years and when i finally decided to do it, theres no better sense of achievment, just getting there in the first place is hard but finishing basic training, the hardest 14 weeks of your life, and having your friends and family cheer for you during your pass off parade is honestly the best feeling i've ever had. Especially if you get an award for best shot as well like a certain someone ha.

All in all if you can handle it, go for it.. It really will be the hardest thing you will ever do but its very rewarding mate.

Maybe in the last 10 years, but every religion is sick and twisted. As long as there is religion, there will be ignorance and blind superstition, which leads to these events.

I agree about that fact organised "black" crime gangs are a problem, but your rant about the "PC Brigade" is Daily Mailesque. Most people are happy to point this out, if anything, more racial problems are caused by our bigoted "little England" Press, than the immigrants or cultures that they criticise.

I'm going to stay out of the racism debate and just focus on saying that religions are terrible things simply designed to make people follow you like sheep out of fear and are all (almost all) bad.

but back on to the original topic, full respect for everyone who's served in the army and Tash if he's still interested in doing this

The Qu'ran gives some ammunition to the fundamentalist nutters, but let's be realistic here. The hate that we can see in the Middle East hasn't generated itself. Maybe if we stopped the bombing and murdering, the tearing apart of families for a few gallons more oil, and treated the inhabitants like humans, we wouldn't find orphans who have nothing to lose joining an extremist group.

We really have brought it on ourselves. They might have been closer to growing out of their stupid superstitions by now, just like the rest of the Western World, if we had left them alone, and not been so greedy.

The religion is a factor, but it is a factor that is used and believed for a reason now.

A family member did two years National Service in the RAF and said it was the best holiday he'd ever had.
