Who said they didn't score when expected? A team can win 3-0 with an xG of 1, have they not scored when expected? You're referring to other tables that show the difference between actual goals and xG to either show under/over-performers to xG. xG itself is literally what it says on the tin - a team's expected goals in a game.
If we're top of the list for xG against that's a terrible indication, it means we're giving up a multitude of big chances to sides and we're exactly where we're meant to be on the table..
We were the worst for xGs against. It was used as indication as to why the pundits discussing the game expected Huddersfield to beat us if they took their chances which they hadn’t being doing in previous games.
And shock horror, they beat us. I think you've misinterpreted what xG actually indicates, as you seem to be taking the next layer of analysis - xG under/over-performance - as what the inherent xG stat means. If we have 10 xG so far for the season and have scored 8 goals, we are underperforming our xG, and you could draw the conclusion that we should be doing better than we are. If we have 10 xG so far for the season and have scored 15 goals, we are overperforming our xG, and you could draw the conclusion that we've been fortunate and results will taper off as we regress to our xG.
The only Gs that matter are the ones where ball ends up in the back of the net. I preferred the less sophisticated days when sentences including the words cow’s arse, banjo and barn door summed up the situation,
Does knowing a team's shots on target suck the joy out of the game for you? xG is really not that different.
You see the crowd rising out of their seats for a shot on goal or for the save but never noticed it for an xG or anyone saying that was a great xG. Over analysis is something best left to American sports in my opinion.
Are we there yet? Or are we still guessing /ITK / hearing a whisper / got a feeling / reading between the lines / waiting for Big Vern to lead the second Cumming...
Yet a post with Truss in it is still up in the Now For Something Completely Different thread is still up from days ago.
