Southampton were trying to complete four new signings on Wednesday night, including a potential club record deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

Deals for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Manchester City duo Samuel Edozie and Juan Larios were close to being announced but the club also remained hopeful on Wednesday night of beating Leeds United to the signing of Gakpo.

They have already had bids rejected for Gakpo, most recently of £21.4 million, but were increasingly hopeful of reaching agreement with PSV as the hours ticked down on the closure of the Dutch transfer window.

Southampton’s focus this summer has been younger talent who want the platform of regular Premier League opportunity and City duo Edozie and Larios, who would arrive with the same buy-back options Chelsea have for Tino Livramento, also very much fit that profile.

Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was also signed this summer after graduating through City’s academy and Joe Shields, the club’s new head of recruitment, previously worked for the champions.

Maitland-Niles would initially arrive on loan with an option to buy.

A quartet of new signings would take the number of summer arrivals into double figures, with Bazunu, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia, Joe Aribo, Sekou Mara, Gavin Bazunu and Mateusz Lis all also joining Ralph Hasenhüttl’s squad.

Gakpo, a Holland international, has scored 25 goals in 55 games for PSV over the last two seasons and, just as they did with players like Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mané, Southampton believe that they can provide the ideal launch pad for a move to one of Europe’s leading clubs.

“The question naturally arose as to whether it would be feasible to get a player like Gakpo, but we think it is good for a player from the Eredivisie to make an intermediate step at a club like Southampton,” said Piet Buter, a Southampton scout. Buter told the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that Gakpo “has a lot of qualities to succeed in England” but added that “the step to the real top is big and therefore an intermediate step is ideal”.
Loic Bade not mentioned…

I think Brownhill would actually be really good for us. Very tidy player .

As a second choice to Garner he’s not bad. Probably reasonably cheap and he’s a good player. He’s scored goals too since he’s been playing in a more progressive midfield this season.

Apparently Martin Braithwaite is cancelling his contract with Barca. There was a link with him earlier in the summer. I wonder where he will end up. I guess Spain but there might be some premier league offers

I’m not even really sure what type of forward he is. As in play style

Not very good.

Well that was an exhausting day. One thing is for sure, tomorrow is going to be Southamptons busiest ever final day of a transfer window. Plenty of in’s and outs. Looks like we will get the 2 new City lads and if they’re anything like the 2 we all ready have, that will be fun. AMN looks to be done and would imagine a CB will come in with both Stephens and Bednarek leaving. Then we have Gakpo. This would truly be the icing on the cake but have a horrible feeling it won’t happen, but whatever happens tomorrow, thank you Sports Republic, you have given all us Saints fans, hope again. Good Night

Southampton have agreed a fee of about £34 million for Cody Gakpo, the Holland winger who could be one of five arrivals before deadline day at the south-coast club.

Gakpo has already scored six goals — including a hat-trick on Wednesday evening — and claimed three assists in the league this season for PSV Eindhoven. The 23-year-old has come through at the Dutch side working with Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United striker who initially worked as a coach in the PSV academy and is now the club’s head coach. Gakpo had his career-best haul last season — ending with 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions — predominantly playing on the left, with some appearances on the other flank or up front.

Southampton have also edged Bournemouth for the expected signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the midfielder who is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and was on loan at Roma last season. The south-coast club are also close to deals for Samuel Edozie, a 19-year-old winger and Juan Larios, a full back, both from Manchester City. They could also move for Duje Caleta-Car, the Marseille defender, if Jan Bednarek leaves. Southampton are in talks to loan Oriol Romeu, the midfielder, to Girona.
