Sess just seems to lack that bit of bite to his game and seems afraid to get stuck in and, more importantly, take players on down the flanks. To my mind, perhaps more so than the fact that 4 out of 5 of our WBs can't really cross the ball is the fact that none of them (apart from Reguilon tbh) try to stretch the play by running at their man. Instead, more often than not what tends to happen is they receive the ball in a good area, trap it and pass it back to someone, killing momentum and allowing the opposition to get back into their defensive shape. Sess is the worst culprit in this regard to my mind, and I feel a lot of it stems from a fundamental lack of confidence that we have seen all to often in his career so far.
True, age is on his side but let's not forget this is his fourth season for the club following a move worth circa £35m. It beggars belief that we are still waiting for consistent and reliable signs of improvement from him. Contrasting case in point: we signed Gareth Bale at a similar age and he endured a similarly and infamously torrid first two seasons at the club. By year 3, signs of improvement were becoming visible and obvious and by his fourth season, he'd established himself as one of the very best in the game.
Granted, Bale was a generational talent and I don't think Sess will ever hit similar heights. But right now he isn't really hitting any. His goal versus Soton only amplified the alarming dearth of key contributions we've seen from him since he joined.
I'm happy to give him one last chance but if by the end of the year he isn't hitting consistent form, we should sell. Five years waiting around for potential to be realised is a bit ridiculous.
