I can only imagine it’s a HG thing and the fact Sess is 3 years younger so there’s hope he’ll come good. I really like Sess as a bloke, has the exact type of professionalism and drive I like from players but his on the pitch stuff just often leaves me scratching my head. I hope Perisic’s guidance can help him but right now I’m more pessimistic than optimistic about his chances of success. Agree Reguilon’s been hard done by though, not perfect but he’s been far from our worst player at the club and statistically has been in the upper tier of Prem LBs in his two seasons. Definitely an odd call by Conte, the one personnel decision I’ve strongly disagreed with.
Sess has more potential than Reguilon as a LWB. Reguilon would be a decent option at LB but doesn’t fit Conte’s system
Just a thought... Paul O'Keefe has said that we're not looking for an AM but instead another winger, and since the last couple of matches have demonstrated we need to have somebody who will make opponents think twice about doubling up on Son, why haven't Noni Madueke or Marcus Edwards come up as options? Not only do both of them have attributes to give teams pause before committing two players onto Sonny, but Edwards would help with both our HG and CG numbers this season while Madueke would count as an U21 and also qualify as both HG and CG next season Look, it's either that or yet another round of Adama ****ing Traore rumours...
Every squad player effectively has a "tolerance" factor, which determines what can be endured in hoping a player "comes good" . Age and HG status are dimensions in this. Transfer/wage costs are others. Sess is currently has a higher factor than Reguilon, but that won't be the case for as long as he may believe.
I must admit I don't understand the criticism of Sess. IMO he defends well and when the chance is there he moves the ball and himself up the wing. He is increasingly in a position to receive a ball into the centre as well as providing crosses into the box. Reg. on the other hand defended well and also moved the ball and himself quickly up the wing. He then tried to provide a centre for players in the box. He seemed to lack the variety in his play that Sess shows. So for me the vote falls as Conte has placed it ..... behind Sess.
Because neither are good enough for Spurs, Conte has high standards and won’t want players just because they fulfill home grown rules. If Spurs wanted someone just for HGS then I think they would have gone for Bale
Sess has a lot to learn and improve on but already he’s a better fit for Spurs then Reguilon. Perisic will hopefully teach Sessegnon a lot this season too.
We're literally being linked with Anthony Gordon and Jack Harrison to fill HG quotas Considering how Alasdair Gold said the ceiling of our Gordon bid was £35m, while Chelsea offered £50 + £10, and Harrison is also being quoted at the £60m mark, paying £20m for Edwards doesn't seem like a bad investment at all (although Madueke would be, he's out until January...)
I don’t want Gordon or Harrison for the huge money quoted. But I also don’t think the club should buy Edwards for £20million either, didn’t he only join his current side in January for €8million. Not sure why he’s suddenly worth over double that.
Sess just seems to lack that bit of bite to his game and seems afraid to get stuck in and, more importantly, take players on down the flanks. To my mind, perhaps more so than the fact that 4 out of 5 of our WBs can't really cross the ball is the fact that none of them (apart from Reguilon tbh) try to stretch the play by running at their man. Instead, more often than not what tends to happen is they receive the ball in a good area, trap it and pass it back to someone, killing momentum and allowing the opposition to get back into their defensive shape. Sess is the worst culprit in this regard to my mind, and I feel a lot of it stems from a fundamental lack of confidence that we have seen all to often in his career so far. True, age is on his side but let's not forget this is his fourth season for the club following a move worth circa £35m. It beggars belief that we are still waiting for consistent and reliable signs of improvement from him. Contrasting case in point: we signed Gareth Bale at a similar age and he endured a similarly and infamously torrid first two seasons at the club. By year 3, signs of improvement were becoming visible and obvious and by his fourth season, he'd established himself as one of the very best in the game. Granted, Bale was a generational talent and I don't think Sess will ever hit similar heights. But right now he isn't really hitting any. His goal versus Soton only amplified the alarming dearth of key contributions we've seen from him since he joined. I'm happy to give him one last chance but if by the end of the year he isn't hitting consistent form, we should sell. Five years waiting around for potential to be realised is a bit ridiculous.
He's contracted until 2026, which is why - and £20m would be considerably less than anyone else, as we transferred the sell-on clause in his contract to Sporting Of course the real question is why it's important we have a HG winger, given the amount of them - off the top of my head Gordon, Harrison, Zaha, and James - we've been linked with this week and not, say, a HG CB to cover for Dier
First paragraph especially is absolutely spot on in my opinion. Sess is far too timid with the ball and he’s not as quick as what I thought he was, not a slouch by any means but I’ve been surprised at his lack of ‘frightening pace’, which I swore he had at Fulham. A semi-fit Perisic in his first start for the club put in a performance that is up there with the very best Sess has done in a Spurs shirt. I’d imagine Udogie will want to come in next summer and be a first team player especially if he matches or better the season he had last time out with Udinese, if Sess doesn’t kick on significantly this season then it’ll be his place Udogie takes as he competes with Perisic and Sess will find himself in a position that Spence is currently in, albeit he’ll be into his 5th year as a Tottenham player at that point.
Sess packing on muscle during the off season's pretty much guaranteed to take the edge off his pace That being said, the amount of players he kept quiet during last season's run-in, most obviously Salah and Saka, really shouldn't be overlooked considering how often Reguillon got burned by them - which would basically make him a left-sided Emerson, but that's a considerable upgrade on a left-sided Aurier
He hasn’t had that blistering pace since joining so the added muscle hasn’t affected anything in that regard. Maybe I just remembered him wrong from Fulham, perhaps a Mandela effect, but I just swore he was someone that had pace to burn. Reguilon’s kept Saka quiet before, so I wouldn’t say he’s regularly been burnt by him. He and Sess have both had iffy and lacklustre performances between them, it’s why Perisic was likely brought in, neither have cemented the role but Conte obviously feels Sess is better/ worth persisting with whilst being able to be mentored by the Croat in the hope he’ll come good (or it’s purely a HG decision?).
Hopefully the club get signings for both positions. HGS is important of course but I don’t want the club to sign someone just because they’re affordable and tick boxes. Luckily I don’t think Conte does either so there’s no chance of Marcus Edwards being signed again.
Romano's said a few things on his podcast: Winks has interest from Spain and other countries - come on people, he's amazing, honest! Make that bid, you won't regret it. Reguilon has other priorities than joining Forest - expected that. Albeit I hope he doesn't completely shut the door just in case nothing comes up. Malinovskyi dreams of joining us - everyone does, mate, everyone does.
Romano's also chipped in saying that Tanganga isn;t particularly close to agreeing anything with Forest, and Milan are still the most likely destination Hopefully Valencia wasn't the only interest in Spain for Winks, given he'd likely be well-suited to the Spanish game as he'd be able to take that extra touch he hasn't been ever since being miscast as a DM in our rickety midfield during the 2018-19 season Reggie to Lazio does appear to be a good move for all parties, although I'm surprised Roma haven't shown an interest as he'd be a definite upgrade on Spinazzola and, more importantly, it would really piss off Nazio's fans if Reggie opted to join their local rivals Malinovskyi is either dead or a backup, as Romano says we haven't made an offer, while what Lyall Thomas is describing sounds a lot like what we had with Tomiyasu or Amrabat where we have them on the hook just in case nothing materialises elsewhere Similarly, Thomas says we're not interested in Zaha, as Palace would be asking £50m+ for a 29yo, and we're not inclined to offer that - so, at which point are we bringing back Andros Townsend...?
A 29-year-old who is 30 in November and whose contract expires next summer. I suspect he'll run his contract down and grab a pretty big one on a Bosman.
