However, that would increase the noise levels dramatically.

Prestressing the rails does the same without the higher noise levels.

i can imagine if the ends are trued up correctly there will be little or no noise. if they are just banged down in any old fashion out of alignement then yes i can imagine noise. but a train wheel with a diameter of what two foot? going over a 3mm gap? wouldnt even know it was there.
stockholm just who's side are you on here?

Don't forget that rails also contract in winter. Railways set up to cope with 40 degree weather will struggle when they get to minus 20.
a 3mm gap over 10 metres would become a 6mm gap at -40? ? thats nowt to a 3 foot diameter wheel. the wheel would drop into the gap about 0.05mm

Happened to me at Coventry about a decade ago.
Two potential solutions spring to mind for this type of common occurence.

1. Request a refund from the club shop, and then wear a plaggy bag on your head once in the ground.

2. Distract the steward by shoving the newly acquired Hull City Umbrella up his his rear entrance, swiftly running past him while he is understandably distracted. Then wear a plaggy bag on your head once in the ground.

Sound advice. I'll take it on board for future reference.
