They wanted to keep smallwood but he wanted a longer term deal with it being his last decent payday.

If we wanted to keep him, we'd have kept him, all we had to do was trigger his extra year as we have with the others.
Whoops I meant to put a smiley at the end!It was a tongue in cheek comment.
Calm yourself down
We don't know how Emmanuel's going to perform at this level, he's only had a handful of games and the new management team won't have seen him at all. I'm guessing he's fairly cheap to run though so is keeping him just a low risk exercise? Now we’ve kept Emmanuel and have Coyle, do we need another right-back? I would’ve liked to see us try and get Kane Wilson on a free from Forest Green but I don’t think it’s necessary with Emmanuel being offered another year.

If they really wanted to keep him, they'd trigger his extension
They probably discussed what would best for both club and player. City wanted to offer him a one-year extension; Smallwood wanted a longer contract which is reasonable for a player his age to want some job security. The conclusion is that City didn’t activate the one-year option and thanked Smallwood for his services to the club and gave him their best wishes to sign a longer contract elsewhere. It’s not the ideal outcome for either party but it’s still a fairly amicable solution.
Completely agree, but if we were that bothered, we'd trigger the option
And have an unhappy, influential player in the camp not starting.
I think this is the main reason why we didn’t trigger the extra year. Smallwood wanted a longer contract and given he played 42 games this season, 40 of which he started, he wanted game time, neither of which the club could guarantee. I wouldn’t expect Smallwood to be content being a squad player for a year before having to find a new club. Makes sense for him to drop down to League 1 again and sign a 2 year deal with an option for a third for a club like Peterborough with a manager he knows and likes and where he’s guaranteed game time.
It’s a good job the Allams weren’t responsible for these decisions….
There’d be uproar
totally disgruntled honeyman our most influential player has been given a years extension when he’s been negotiating since January!! Way to go
Makes me wonder what sort of deals these signings are coming in on?
Think we are all speculating aren’t we ? Don’t have a clue about incoming wages , nor existing to be honest but I get a feel we will be underwhelmed at least for this year -BUT I do think the guys in charge and Shota know exactly what we will need . They will have looked at the successful sides and realised an unspectacular 9 plus two of superior pace , skill or quality will get you up
