Beyond that, if they're not teaching basic spelling and grammar at schools, what the **** are they filling the days with?

Going by my grandson's school, written warnings and detentions for ridiculous reasons.

I would have never written in slang terms though. The only time I wrote as a child/teen/young adult was at shool, college or work so it always had to be formal. Social media has no such expected standards and so some people type as they talk. It must be horrendous for english teachers marking teenagers' essays now.

I got a telling off from an English teacher for describing something as tripe. He said there was no such word, did I mean trite? My reply that he had better tell my dad as he was eating no such thing with onions the other night for his tea got me a detention.

Imagine getting booted off a thread for asking relevant questions regarding the thread topic to posters who had passed on information because doing do was deemed tedious.

Can’t wait for the puns to start.

Yes so the medium of speech has changed with the advance of technology, not sure that is really a commentary on the younger generation or just the advancement of society.

Language changes over time and dropping of entire syllables is regular. In Modern English, ‘king’ has one syllable. In Old English, ‘cyning’ had two syllables. And if you go further back, Proto-Germanic in the 1st millennium BC probably had *kuningaz with three syllables.

‘Slang’ or shortened forms of words is not a new thing. It’s been an occurrence in languages since time immemorial.

Imagine not heeding repeated polite warnings from a moderator. Oddly, much like language, threads evolve to include puns etc. Of course one could always take their own wise advice and just scroll down the page. That is all. :emoticon-0100-smile

Imagine if the moderator was consistent.

Evolving doesn’t make it less boring.

Consistent.

We’re usually in agreement but Ben has a point that spelling ****e should not carry on it is so tedious.
