I don’t know the ins and outs of why Defoe isn’t coming but I feel like the club have now put huge pressure on themselves to deliver in this market and to deliver promotion. Because if he ends up being a success at his next club (presuming it’s Oxford) and we sign a striker who doesn’t succeed then people are going to be angry and lose faith in our recruitment and the people making the decisions. On the other hand if Defoe fails and our transfers are a success it will also show people why they are paid to make decisions and fans aren’t. I really hope it’s the latter. Big few days in this window ahead.
Massive. Defoe or not, we’re desperate for another forward option - absolutely ****ed if Stewart gets injured.

absolutely agree. But there’s no chance we don’t have another option lined up. They’d been planning for this window long before Defoe was available.

Heck this time 10 days ago the idea of Defoe signing for us seemed ludicrously ridiculous. Now all of a sudden many people are acting like it’s ridiculous he’s not signing

Either way, I think it would be best for all concerned, fans, club and Defoe for a yes or no asap. Once arguments start on a message board between fans, (arguments and debate are two different entities), it's just not worth it like.

If he wants to come and play for us for one last bit or romance, so be it. But realistically, if he wants the media life he'll go closer to that. Personally I think he'll go to Charlton (hope I'm wrong). Odd one for me was Simon Jordan on talkSPORT tipped Charlton pretty much as Defoe left Rangers. Lots of clubs to choose from if you're pulling names out of a hat, but low and behold, Charlton are in for him.

Captain comedown...wtf???
I'm sick of being in this horrible ****ty league and being beaten by utter crap teams.
We need to get out this league ASAP and if it means a little bit more investment on a proven goal scorer like JD then we should ensure it happens.
If he signs for another L1 club instead....well you know the script

I’m as sick as **** of this ****ty league as anyone but I’m not about to slate the club because a 39 year old striker doesnt want to come back for unknown reasons. I still think there’s time for more deals to be done. Def mid and another striker

Can we just end this ‘he’s 39’ nonsense.

You know Zlatan, who is 6ft 5 so harder to keep right, and had his knee rebuilt 3 years ago is still a regular in Serie A for a Milan team sat second in the league?

Zlatan is 40, and has scored 33 in 51 in a league waaaay above League One standard.

If he doesn’t sign, the reasons I won’t be too arsed won’t be because of his age.

Before anyone starts I’m aware Defoe ain’t Zlatan.

reeto, we are ALL sick of being in this league but 'being beaten by utter crap teams'??

mate, we ARE a third division team right now and we are not going to attract prima donnas in their prime, spending money is not what gets us out of the league and if you remember, when we came into it we still had mostly premier league players and we know how that worked out...currently, we are still the 'big guns' and week after week we have to suffer as teams lift their game 50% to 'show big old sunderland' while the officials all try to make a stand to prove they will not be swayed by our support, i have watched some of those 'utter crap teams' play some bloody good football as well and we are never going to get it all our own way because of who we are/were.

defoe has to make a choice which is best for him, feck being sentimental and taking a worse offer just to end his playing days here, he has to look to the future rather than the past and it does not mean that our club did not try their utmost to bring him here...ffs this was not even thought about until someone decided that LJ 'skirted around' a question, now the knives are out ready to stab him in the back and i can all but guarantee that whoever started that train of thought has posted many times that he does not like LJ and that we should get rid of him.

If I’m honest to myself then I don’t care who he chooses and I’m not bothered about this “got to look after himself and what’s best for him” Theres no doubt he could score goals down here for us but I’m more concerned about what’s good for Sunderland football club and if the powers that be feel it’s not right them I’m 100 % behind the decision. I’m also hugely confident that we have another striker signed before the end of the month that will get us over the line or at least the ball over the line

Defoe would have been a brilliant signing. There’s no getting around that.

But he’s not going elsewhere because of money. If he’s going elsewhere it will be for alternative reasons. And frankly at his stage of his life he’s entitled to pretty much choose any reason he wants really.

If he’s moving for footballing reasons (selection), then are people really saying the club should have guaranteed him whatever he wanted, despite spending a lot of time and effort putting plans and structures in place? Or should we have started rotating him with Stewart or changed our shape to guarantee him starts? It’s easy to say “give him a coaching role”. But the club has a structure, we can’t just be creating roles to attract people. Where does that end?

Maybe he wants an 18 month deal at a high wage. Maybe he scores a few this season but we still don’t go up. Then next year we have a 40 year old striker in league one getting paid too much and struggling.

If he’s moving elsewhere for geographical reasons, should we have thrown money at him to come and play for us? Is that sending a good message to the market and agents that Sunderland are willing to do that? All of a sudden we become the place people come to for the money again. The piss take party comes back.

And should we be letting him live down south doing media duty and then paying for a helicopter to get him back? Again what message does that send about the region? “Come and play for Sunderland - it’s ok if you don’t want to live here!”

He’d have been brilliant. But the club has a plan. The club has standards. And the club has a structure and strategy that needs to be 100% focused on developing us back to where we want to be.

Bringing Defoe back in a way that fits that ethos would have been superb. Breaking it for short term gain would just be the first domino in a potentially damaging chain.

Now if we can convince him to join on our terms - I’ll be over the moon.

Cracking post mate, i agree, still be gutted if he doesnt choose us, part because of the lift he would give, impact sub....but just as much the mentor, think Defoe would bring so much more than a player, id give him 18 month & tell us when you cant play & your a coach only. Understand football finance is not that simple now & they maybe thinking ahead that we maybe stuck with a player wage for 10/20 mins a game.

Player/coach, 90% are coach wages:emoticon-0103-cool: dont know if that gets you round. beleive wage issue would come in championship?

Surely he cant be expecting 90 mins anywhere at 39?

Tbh..I'm more concerned about the defensive part of the side. Delighted to have Baath, a player we've needed for a long time. Scoring goals is not an issue for us imo, it's keeping it tighter at the back that will get us promoted.

That's a fair point but at minimum of 1 striker is needed to come in. Ross can not be expected to stay fit indefinitely and the other options are horrific.

I agree, hence my thread about Defence last week.

However cos of Broadhead's injury we need a replacement. Imho a couple of recent games have shown this.

I am very happy for Defoe to return, but he should be in addition to not instead of.
