Off Topic Hull City Centre Public Realm Strategy

It's amazing how much effort some people will go to to 'prove' Hull is ****, when in reality, it's suffering in a similar way to many places, and has an awful lot of great things that are pretty much unique to us.

Perhaps if the naysayers put as much effort into looking at the good aspects of the city, and defending it with a sense of realism and pride, it may just make it more attractive to inward investment.

I'm Hull, and I'm proud of it.

It always seems to come back to shopping, and maybe it's me that's the weird one here, but that's almost an irrelevance to me. You can get most things in Hull, and you can get basically everything online. I honestly don't think I've ever in my life thought about making a trip to another city in order to go shopping.

Surely in 2022, city centres are more about leisure, eating and drinking than they are about shopping anyway. Hull's is great for that.

But shopping is a leisure activity for many, they shop for fun, then they will often eat and drink afterwards.

Maybe because I don’t really do much shopping. I judge a city by the quality of the bars & restaurants.
In those terms Hull has really moved on over the last 20 years & is in decent shape, much better than some of the “bigger” cities

I bought an Armani jacket from Bronx, Paragon Square last week............ just saying like

I've got stuff like Fred Perry tshirts from Bronx before, but you can get Armani underwear from TK Maxx. It doesn't make it a top end shop.

Not City Centre obviously but we ate at Uno's on Newland Ave the last time we were down...Absolutely fantastic!! I'm not a huge fan of Italian food but we went with some family members who had booked it.Wife says it was the best Arabiatta she'd ever had and my Lasagne was 10/10

I'm with you on that, I loathe shopping with a passion, unless it's to ask the bar maid for another pint of Guinness.

On that note, I'm off out for a wander around old town 'shopping' for beer.

There's some great pubs and bars, old and new around these days, but I maybe do feel a bit for 18-20 year olds. When I was that age there was about 10-12 nightclubs/late bars to choose from depending what you were into. I'm well past that now, but I can't see there's much going on in that area.

I wouldn't know, like most blokes, I can't abide shopping. I do know the rest of it is alright, and if people focused on that, it could just help the footfall for those that for some peculiar reason like shopping.

We've had decent shops before and they haven't closed down because they where profitable .

The shops available in Glasgow are in a completely different league to those available in Hull.

Just out of interest,do you know this shop in Glasgow? Dee's of Trongate (Argyle St),he sells all the mod gear,trojan,ska and soul etc(Don't know if you supply him or not)?

That shop has been there for as long as I can remember living up here and always sold trendy/modern gear that you couldn't get anywhere else in Glasgow.

He was ,and still is ,ahead of Scottish fashion with the stuff he knocks out

That shop has been there for as long as I can remember living up here and always sold trendy/modern gear that you couldn't get anywhere else in Glasgow.

He was ,and still is ,ahead of Scottish fashion with the stuff he knocks out

I buy the odd Trojan out of there.Last time I was in I got a nice pair of loafers(Ikon,leather uppers and soles) and the wife got a lovely pair of desert boots.

He's very reasonable and like I say the shop has stood the test of time.

Yes, I realise that but I was speaking more generally, not just about Hull. I've said this before but I think Hull city centre has always been just too disjointed. If Princes Quay could be smartened up and with a rejuvenated Whitefriargate, the covered market and fruit market fully populated I think decent shops would have a chance of surviving.

That's like a club putting on a gig every night, but only having **** bands and saying the beers good, if only people focused on that...

Reality is, the footfall in the city centre won't improve, until the retail offer also improves.

I tend to go for a drink whilst the wife shops. That way we are both happy. Especially me.
