In the Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy documentary, Hunky Dory took a bit of a slagging as a so-so effort pre-Ziggy. That seemed pretty harsh to me, although I knew a couple of blokes who were so ridiculously into it in the late 70's, when London was spawning a new band every month, that I got turned against it somewhat. It's a really good album, even if the next few he was involved in were better (IMO).
A stepping stone to Ziggy and all that came thereof.
If you assess it as if it is the only LP ever made by Bowie,
Hunky Dory is miles above the collective content produced
by many artists over a long career.
