Supposedly comes from the rum barrel lids on which the destination would be written.
The French tasters would travel around selecting the best rum for export to France and sent to the quays for shipping ... aux quais ("to the quays")
Some of the barrels were initially switched by the locals, for inferior rum, hence the tradition of branding the destination of the barrels with hot irons.
It may be nonsense but I like it so that's what I'm sticking with ...

Woke up early and trying not to disturb Mrs Smug, the mood in which she rises affects my entire day.
So I've eventually looked at the alternative Takeover Thread and waded through the endless repetitive posts about Friday, ties in, cans, etc.
One thing that stands out is how many people dismiss FPP's loan as being insignificant to them and the interest simply peanuts. Sorry but that's absolute nonsense.
In wildly simplified terms a billionaire may have a billion pounds worth of assets or a billion pound out working in the form of loans and investments. It's rarely in a case on top of the wardrobe.
So, if the loan to Sunderland returns each of FPP £1 million that's a million bloody pounds in cash. It's a bit daft for people to say 'yeah but that's the equivalent of me finding 50p'. No, it's a million pounds. If earning more millions wasn't important none of them would ever need to do another day's work in their lives.
And this is why they drive the hardest bargains, because it's hard wired into them. Saying buyers, of the club, should just pay a few more million, to seal the deal, is disingenuous. These people don't see £1m as a percentage of their total wealth, therefore 50p, they see it as £1m just like anyone else.
I'm amazed so many people think otherwise.
