When we moved to Hull on 1 January 1962, there were eight, yes EIGHT, chip shops on Newland Ave. There were more on the side streets, like Reynoldson and Exmouth Streets.
I have been trying to remember the name of the shop next the Monica. It was where I got my Corgi James Bond car. I've still got it.
On the same side of the road there was an electrician's shop called Thompson's. His wife taught us at Sidmouth Street. On the other side was a plumber's, I think, called Middleton's. The daughter was in my class, as was the daughter of Fosters. Another daughter in my class was Beattie. They owned the sweet shop between Sharp Street and Edgecumbe Street.
