Don’t work in a unionised business. Their original policy also covered UK holidays and staying overnight away from home. They backed down when they wanted me to stay away overnight for work and I said I couldn’t. Have spoken to a couple of HR specialists who said it would be very difficult to enforce. Also wanted a colleagues family to test as well - her husband refused as had no symptoms

You could phone ACAS and explain the situation, they'll offer you some practical advice on what to do.

You are wrong but no need to apologise
I only know this crap from reading it for staff at work
DPH does single premise restrictions due to actual outbreaks
Matt Hancock decides on geographical lockdowns (like Bolton) and sector wide lockdowns (like theatres)

    That’s why unions are important
They can have a policy which says you can’t fly or stay overnight for work, but I don’t see how other unpaid leave is lawful
I guess a formal grievance, or ideally a collective one from all staff, might help, but ultimately it could take an employment tribunal to resolve which is a big gamble in a non unionised workplace

Thanks. Not rocking the boat at the moment as they have reeled the policy in to cover foreign holidays only which I am not planning in the near future. Will rock it if necessary in the future.

As an aside to that, you have the right to join a union even though your company don't recognise them. Some people choose to do this because your dues would include access to union lawyers should you need them.

The way I see things we lost our one chance of slowing this thing down back in March at International airports with screening but the reality is there was never ever anyway of actually stopping this thing reaching us and the rest of the World.

Any large group is now a risk.

The infection rate is higher in Middlesbrough and Norwich from all accounts and ther games are still having fans in, aren't they. Though Boro will have to manage without their manager.

Unions none existent in my line of work.

They have reeled in the policy to cover foreign holidays only and backed down re the colleagues family being tested and said that you may be able to work from home at the directors discretion which would likely cover me as I am currently working from home. A colleague is in Italy now so will be interesting to see what happens when he returns.

Emma Hardy MP was on Burnsy and said she had enquired what figures this decision was based on. She was told she couldn't have that information as PHE would not release the figures until 4 days after each reading.

It’s not the infection rate, it’s rate of increase ...in the rate (if that makes sense)
No idea what others increase is, but definitely it’s not the only thing they’ll consider.
They might have been working with local safety people before they had the announcement they’d been selected so everyone was already happy with plans
Looks like City didn’t do that and so either their plan might have been poor or there wasn’t time to test and check it?
Easier to hang the decision on the rate as it’s less subjective but I assume there’s more to it than that

So are we saying this may not have been HCC's call?

I’m just saying there are more organisations than just the council involved in the discussions and I assume there’ll have been more than just the rate discussed.
Ultimately I think it’s someone from the Council who signs off the certificate though, with advice from others.

Your assuming City have slipped up some where over this without anything to back that up at all. Whilst at the same time dismissing that HCC are blameless.
10 clubs were invited to take part in this trial. Two threw the towel in straight away because of the work involved. City bent over backwards to get this fans trial on in the short time they were given. Seven other council's rubber stamped their clubs efforts including ,M'Boro in the middle of a Covid hotspot where infections rates are four times higher then they are in Hull.
Dress it up as you like but this decision by one person at HCC appears more about covering one's back then it does about public safety.
600 invited people in a 25,000 stadium ?? and its unsafe ? Come on.

I check the figures on the Guardian website. They give numbers per 100,00 of local population. Last week the numbers for Hull were 6 new cases which puts us well at the bottom of that league, the best being the Western Isles, the worst, Bolton 176. The all time rate is 647, mid table. All time cases 1681. Again mid table ish.

From those figures it appears as a city, we are getting on top of this. But just exactly how, when we have resumed some sort of normality along with the rest of the country, have we avoided the dreaded second spike?

Perhaps, maybe, who knows, I'm probably wrong again, but by controlling the gathering of people where they can, the council and advisers are doing what they think is best to further contain the spread.

Would the council have blocked it if it was going to directly make them money?......I seriously doubt it

"without anything to back that up at all" - your turn.

One persons decision? Are you sure?
Why do you think it would be safe?
**** hits the fan. A positive covid result. Test and trace contacts everyone at the game and tells them to self isolate. You ring your employer with the joyous news to inform him you won't be at work for two weeks. And then contemplate the next two unpaid weeks wondering if it really was such a good idea to watch City.
